Buffalo Drops Heartbreaker At Home To In State Rival Binghamton, 22-18

NEWS

BUFFALO, NY - Hosting just their fourth home dual of the season, the University at Buffalo wrestling team (3-15, 0-6 MAC) lost a heartbreaker to in state rival Binghamton on Friday night at Alumni Arena by the score of 22-18.

"This one stung," said first year head coach John Stutzman. "We had the early lead and let it slip away against an in state rival. We need to learn how to finish off matches. We will regroup tomorrow and get ready to take on a very good Eastern Michigan squad on Sunday."

With the slim 18-16 lead in the dual heading into the final match of the night at 285 pounds, the Bulls could not hold on as James Benjamin was pinned at 0:50 seconds of the first period.

The beginning of the Bulls lineup did their job as Justin Farmer secured his first career pin at home as he downed Mike Sardo at the 3:30 mark of the second period. The win for Farmer gives him two straight victories and 11 on the season.

Leading 6-3 heading into the third match of the night, Nick Flannery put together a dominant performance that had the home crowd buzzing. Flannery controlled the match from the opening whistle, downing Nick Tighe by major decision, 17-2. The win for Flannery gives him 16 on the season, tying him for second on the team with Angelo Malvestuto.

With the 11-3 lead, the Bulls could not extend their lead as Ryan Todora lost by major decision to Joe Bonaldi of Binghamton. Wally Maziarz was quick to slow the Bearcats momentum in the very next match at 157 as he defeated western New York native Dylan Caruana by the score of 3-1.

Vincent Grella denied freshman Jake Campana his first career dual meet victory at 165 pounds in the next match, downing the New Jersey native 6-0. With the Bulls leading 14-10, Rrok Ndokaj put together one of his best duals of the season, picking up the major decision victory over Ben Price, 14-4. Ndokaj had control the whole match and gave the Bulls the commanding 18-10 lead, heading into the final three matches.

Tony Lock was not able to close out the match for the Bulls at 184 on Friday night as he was shutout, 4-0 by Caleb Wallace to give the Bearcats hope, still trailing 18-13. Unfortunately for the Bulls, the final two matches of the night went to the visiting team as Cody reed won by decision and Tyler Deuel won by pin in the first period, sealing the win for Binghamton.

For the match, the Bulls recorded 14 takedowns to go along with a trio of two-point near falls. The Bearcats were able to earn 15 takedowns and only one two-point near fall.

The Bulls will return to the mat on Sunday afternoon, as they will travel to conference foe Eastern Michigan for a dual at 1:00 pm.
