Sean Peterson (Islip) claimed the 141 title at the Wildcat Open hosted by Johnson and Wales on Saturday in Providence, RI.
Peterson went 4-0 on the day including a 3-2 win in the finals to be crowned champion. He received a bye in round one and won by tech fall over Joshua Roberts (Johnson & Wales) (TF 15-0) in round two. In the quarterfinal he won in sudden victory over Anthony Martin (Coast Guard) (SV-1 8-6). In the semifinal he won by medical forfeit over Hayden Brown (Johnson & Wales) and then won by decision in the finals over Elijah Cyr (Castleton).
Four other Pioneers placed including Blake Ilges (Canisteo Greenwood) claimed runner-up at 197, Dawsen Yates (Bolivar) earned third place at 133, Tyler Pelech (Ridge/Longwood) finished fifth at 197 and Mike Galton (Warsaw) was sixth at 174.
Ilges won by fall over Ryan Mccartney (Bridgewater State) (Fall 3:09) in round one, won by decision over Maxx DeCapua (Johnson & Wales (RI)) (Dec 9-2) in round two, won by decision over Maximo Ruiz (Stevens Tech) (Dec 11-7) in the semifinals but lost to Noah Tandy (Roger Williams) by a 5-3 decision in the first-place match.
Yates received a bye in round one, won by decision over Owen Woolcott (M2 Training Center) (Dec 10-5) in round two, won by fall over Christian Rivas (Johnson & Wales (RI)) (Fall 5:43) in the quarterfinal, lost in the semifinal to Gabriel Leo-Esparolini (Johnson & Wales (RI)) by a 12-11 decision, won the consolation semifinal over Christopher Gomez (Johnson & Wales (RI)) (Fall 4:57) and won the third place match by decision over Owen Woolcott (M2 Training Center) (Dec 2-1).
Pelech won by fall over Justin Vega (Roger Williams) (Fall 4:08) in round one, lost in the quarterfinal to Noah Tandy (Roger Williams) by an 8-4 decision, won the round two consolation by fall over Ryan Mccartney (Bridgewater State) (Fall 2:43), won the round three consolation by fall over Kevin McEachin (Coast Guard) (Fall 4:06), lost in the consolation semifinal to Maximo Ruiz (Stevens Tech) by an 8-4 decision but came back to win the fifth place match by fall over Derek Liddle (Shenandoah University) (Fall 0:22).
Galton won round one won by major decision over Dylan Weaver (Shenandoah University) (Maj 17-7), won round two by fall over Jaden Grigsby (Rhode Island College) (Fall 1:58), lost in the quarterfinals to Frank Medina (Stevens Tech) by a 7-5 decision, came back to win round four consolation by decision over Blaise Wagner (Stevens Tech) (Dec 14-7, won round five consolation by decision over Syrus Colon (Castleton) (Dec 6-4), lost the consolation semifinal by a 5-1 decision to Joel Martsinovsky (Stevens Tech) and the fifth-place match was ruled no contest with Michael Ross (Johnson & Wales (RI)).
The Pioneers are back home Friday, Jan. 28 for an AMCC matchup with Penn State Behrend at 7 p.m.
