UNION SPRINGS -- Sending eight men into the finals and winning six championships, the Union Springs wrestling team copped the Cayuga County championship, edging second place Weedsport by eight points.
Union Springs piled up 80 points while Weedsport was second with 72, followed by Port Byron, 34; Cato-Meridian, 24, and Moravia, 16.
Freshman George Zakielarz of Union Springs was named the outstanding wrestler for his 3-2 overtime victory in the 112 pound class against Terry Foxton of Weedsport, who last year was a Section 6 champion while at Silver Creek.
Scott Coapman at 127; Ron Mintern at 133; Larry Drown at 145, Rich Hartwell 165 and Jum Sproull at 180 were the other Union Springs champions.
