Binghamton Wrestling wraps up weekend at Kaloust Open

NEWS

S. DePrez captures second at 174, Gamkrelidze finishes third at 165

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton wrestling ended opening weekend by hosting the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open. The Bearcats had four wrestlers place in the top five of their respective weight classes. Sam DePrez was the only Bearcat to wrestle in the finals of any weight class, capturing second place at 174 pounds. Dimitri Gamkrelidze finished third at 165 pounds, Michael Zarif took fourth at 149 pounds, and Ivan Garcia won five bouts in the consolation bracket to place fifth at 133 pounds.

Nate Lucier (141), Fin Nadeau (149), Carter Baer (165), and Will Ebert (165) all picked up their first career win at the tournament.

"I thought our team wrestled well today," said head coach Kyle Borshoff. "A lot of our young guys got some great experience, and it was awesome seeing Sammy (DePrez) make the finals at 174. We have some issues we need to improve on, but none of our guys showed any quit in their matches. That goes a long way as the season moves on."
