Ithaca Wrestling Impresses at New Standard Invitational

NEWS

YORK, Pa. - The football team wasn't the only ones traveling across state lines to compete. The Ithaca College wrestling program traveled down to York, Pennsylvania for the New Standard Invitational as the championship rounds wrapped up on Saturday. The unranked squad had a great deal of success as team runner up despite not entering an athlete at 184. Ithaca ended the tournament outsourcing three teams ranked by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. They outscored #14 York College, #9 The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), and #5 Stevens. The team who took home the title is ranked Johnson & Wales University (JWU) who entered an average of over two athletes a weight class, so this runner up finish should put Ithaca on the team ranks watch-list as they improve throughout the season. The Bombers had plenty of individual awards this invite; Here's the breakdown

125- DNP

133- Isaias Torres: Offense was firing on all cylinders for the champion this tournament. Up until the championship, Torres averaged over 11 points per match (including a first period fall). While he didn't light up the scoreboard in the finals, "only" scoring 6 points, he shut out his opponent. The first year has only been improving since he has put on an Ithaca College singlet, which should be a scary sight for 133 pounders across the country.

141- #10 Luis Hernandez: This weight class was very top-heavy with three top 10 wrestlers entered. Hernandez still grinded to end with a 3rd place finish. His only loss was a close 8-6 decision to #9 Gabriel Leo (JWU). Leo then went on to upset #7 Domenic Difrancescantonio (TCNJ), so there is little chance to imagine Hernandez ranking would fall. Not that he would be thinking about his ranking. It's almost a guarantee that the captain is focused on learning from this loss with the dual season approaching.

149- Matthew Beyer: A 4-3 ranked loss to #14 Hai Siu (Averett) for second place hurts. HOWEVER? a convincing 9-3 upset over #3 Mike Conklin (TCNJ) in the quarterfinals had Beyer and his teammates fired up. This was the most explosive bracket with upsets happening everywhere, but Beyer had the biggest upset of the tournament by far. What was impressive about this run was that it wasn't like Conklin was in control and got caught on his back. Beyer won 9-3. Beyer BEAT Conklin. This just shows that he can beat anybody in the country. All it takes is for Beyer to find his groove on the mat.

157- Wenchard Pierre-Louis, Travis Jones, & Adrian Rosario-Beato: This weight class has a problem, but probably one of the best problems head coach Marty Nichols could imagine. They're all good. Wenchard Pierre-Louis and Travis Jones wrestled for third, with Pierre-Louis coming out with the decision victory. Adrian Rosario-Beato was looking like he was on his way to a third-place match, but then lost to Pierre-Louis. It's a tough time when a lot of your losses are coming from your teammates, but iron sharpens iron. Depending how much weight is gained/lost, this might be a problem that makes Ithaca better next year if they are able to spread out to fill some of the graduation holes.

165- Jackson Gray: Another champion for the Bombers comes at 165. The victories were never flashy. The average margin of victory came by 3 points, but you don't win a title by doing backflips mid-match. Doubtful that an athlete or coach at IC prefers fan-given style points over referee-given match points. Funny Storyline: Gray avenged his loss against Stevens twice. One to start the tournament, and one to end the tournament.

174- DNP

184- No Athlete Entered

197- Eze Chukwuezi: As #6 in the country, it would be difficult to find a match where Eze would be the underdog on paper in the regular season. It just so happened that #3 Cam Farrow wrestles for York, who was running the invitational. Before meeting Farrow in the finals, Eze controlled #12 Dylan Harr (JWU) for a 6-2 decision. He looked sharp and up for the challenge of #3 Farrow. Eze was stoic throughout the entire match on his way to a 3-1 decision victory, overthrowing #3 Farrow in his own house. With that win, Eze claimed the third title for IC on the day. When the new rankings emerge, look for Eze Chukwuezi to enter the NCWA top 5. If anybody could have possibly questioned the idea of Eze being a title contender before, they certainly can't question him now.

Next up, the Bombers will participate in the Chocolate Duals on Saturday, December 17. Ithaca is slated to take on Millikin University, McDaniel College and Messiah University.
