Ithaca, NY ? Following day one of the NCAA Mideast Regionals, the SUNY Brockport squad still has four wrestlers remaining in the brackets. Elijah Sims (149), Matthew Kline (165), Michael Sullivan (197), and Joe Yanis (285) will be back in action Saturday for day two of regionals.
The top three wrestlers in each weight class, earn a spot at the NCAA Division III National Championships.
Elijah Sims went 3-1 on the day in the 149-division. He picked up a win by a 6-4 decision to start his run. In the next bout he pinned his opponent in just 2:52, before losing by a fall in 6:41 in the third matchup. He closed the day with a 3-0 decision victory to remain in the bracket for day two on Saturday.
At 165, Matthew Kline also went 3-1 on the day, which included a pin in 2:53 after a loss in the first bout. He continued on with decision wins of 6-4 and 7-3 to advance further in the tournament. Kline and Sims will both compete in the consolations, fighting for a top three finish.
Michael Sullivan was undefeated on the first day of regionals. He earned wins by way of fall in 3:27 and by a 15-4 major decision. On Saturday he competes in the semifinals of the 197-weight class, as he chases a regional title and a spot at nationals.
Heavyweight Joe Yanis followed Sullivan's lead with two big wins to advance to the semifinals. Yanis took the win by a major decision, 13-0, to start the day. In his next bout he pulled out a tough, 3-2, decision to advance onward. On Saturday Joe will also be wrestling for a spot at nationals and potentially a regional title.
At 125, Liam Bullock lost his first bout by a 7-5 sudden victory. He bounced back with a win by fall in 6:31 of the next match, before his day was cut short by a 17-9 major decision loss in his third go.
Marquis Larmond started his run in the 141-weight class with a major decision victory, 15-2. However, he dropped the next two bouts to bring his season to an end.
The Golden Eagles are back in action on Saturday down in Ithaca, NY for the final day of the NCAA Mideast Regional Tournament. Sims, Kline, Sullivan, and Yanis will battle in hopes to punch their tickets to nationals.
