Ithaca, NY - The SUNY Brockport wrestling team competed on the final day of the NCAA Mideast Regional Competition, hosted by Ithaca College on Saturday. The Golden Eagles finished the meet with a total of 54 points in 12th place and will be sending Elijah Sims and Joe Yanis onto NCAA III Championships in Roanoke, Virginia.
Elijah Sims (149), Matthew Kline (165), Michael Sullivan (197), and Joe Yanis (285) represented the Green and Gold on the mats today.
Sims went undefeated on the final day of competition to punch his ticket to national in the 149-weight class. He picked up a tech fall victory (15-0) in 5:38 before getting win by forfeit in the consolation semifinals. Then in the third place match he clutched out a 3-1 sudden victory, earning his spot at nationals in dramatic fashion.
In the heavyweight division, Yanis started the day with a 5-0 decision loss in the semifinals. He moved onto the consolation semifinals, where he won by a fierce 2-1 decision. He won his final match of the day by a 2-0 decision, landing himself third place and a ticket to nationals.
Kline started day two with a 2-3 loss. He moved into the consolation rounds, falling in his second match, placing him eighth in the tournament at 165.
Sullivan fell in the semifinal round by a 6-5 decision, sending him into the consolation bracket. He fell in his second match of the day by a pin at 4:21, eventually finishing sixth overall in the tournament.
Elijah Sims and Joe Yanis will continue their seasons and prepare for NCAA DIII Nationals in Roanoke, Virginia on March 10th and 11th.
