ITHACA, N.Y. - The first All-Region wrestler in program history, that's what Chris Powell '25 accomplished on Saturday afternoon for the Elmira College men's wrestling program when he heard his name called on the podium inside Glazer Arena at Ithaca College.
Powell placed 6th for the Soaring Eagles competing in the heavyweight division at the 2023 NCAA DIII Mideast Regional Championships and wrestled six matches along the way while scoring 11 team points for Elmira.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The opening bout of the day for Powell would be a Consolation Round Three matchup against Jake Ahmad from Ursinus. Both wrestlers would score a point in the second period as Ahmad would take a 1-0 lead after earning a quick escape point. He would later be called twice for stalling at the end of the period to knot the score 1-1. Powell secured the 2-1 victory in the bout as he would be awarded a riding-time point at the end of the match.
In the Consolation Semifinals, Powell would draw Joe Yanis from Brockport. It would be another low-scoring bout for both wrestlers as the difference would come down to the riding-time point, which would be awarded to Yanis to break a 1-1 tie and secure a 2-1 victory.
Powell would advance to the 5th Place Match where he faced Jake Pine from Oneonta State. In the bout, it would be Powell that gained the lead in the second period after securing an escape point at the 1:15 mark. With both wrestlers arm-locked in the third period, the difference would come down to a reversal by Pine at the 1:02 mark as he would take a 2-1 lead and hold on to secure the victory over Powell.
Through his six matches at the regional tournament, Powell faced three wrestlers that tallied at least 20 victories on the season, while the combined record of his opponents was 111 wins and 58 losses. Powell was seeded 8th at the start of the tournament in the heavyweight division and was one of just two wrestlers in the division to finish more than one place higher than their opening seed.
