Brockport, NY - Beginning with day one at 11am on Friday, March 1st, the Golden Eagle wrestling program will have two competing at the NCAA Division III Championships.
Sims Path to Nationals: Elijah Sims will be heading to Virginia for the DIII Championships, competing at nationals for the first time in his career.
Going 3-1 on day one of the regional meet, Sims fought his way through to get into the third-place bout. He went undefeated on the second day of regionals to punch his ticket to nationals in dramatic fashion.
Elijah pulled out a 3-1 sudden victory to take third place and earn his spot at nationals. His first bout in the national spotlight will be against Ohio Northern's Chase Sumner.
Yanis Punching His Ticket: Joe Yanis is also heading to his first go on the national stage this year. At heavyweight he claimed his spot to compete this weekend by taking third place at the NCAA Mideast Regionals.
A successful start to the regional tournament found Yanis in the semifinals of the bracket. He started the second day with a 5-0 decision loss in the semifinals. He moved onto the consolation semifinals, where he won by a fierce 2-1 decision. He won his final match of the day by a 2-0 decision, landing himself third place and a ticket to nationals.
He begins his journey on Friday with a matchup against Kaleb Reeves from Coe College.
First Year at the Helm: Head Coach Sam Recco will conclude his first season as leader of the program this weekend down in Virginia. His tenure at Brockport begins with a 7-6 winning record in regular season duals and bringing two wrestlers to nationals in year one.
All Comes Down to This: Friday and Saturday's action on the mat will be the final day of the season for all competing wrestlers. National champions will be crowned following Saturday's set of matches, bringing the 2022-23 season to a close.
