Scott A. Stever passed away peacefully on March 25, 2023. Predeceased by his parents, Harley and Mary Louise Stever, his daughter Amy Stever and granddaughter Ava Krantz. Survived by his wife Cynthia Stever, daughters April (Jeff) Krantz, Emily (Andy) Rice, Chrissy Spaccio and brother Jan (Kathy) Stever. He has 5 grandchildren (Caleb, Ariella, and Gianna Krantz, Zeke and Zoey Rice).
"Coach Stever" was a passionate wrestler, coach and mentor, born and raised in Corning, New York. He attended Corning East High School where his wrestling career began and where he became a stand out on the mats. After high school, he went on to win many collegiate championships at Corning Community College and the University at Buffalo. Scott earned 2 All American Honors and qualified for 2 NJCAA Championships at Corning Community College. At the University of Buffalo Scott captured 6 AAU Freestyle titles, the first New York State Collegiate Championship at 142 lbs and qualified for 2 NCAA championships. After College, he started his coaching career with his brother, Jan Stever, at Corning West High School. He went on to coach at the University at Buffalo as assistant coach under Ed Michael and co-authored a book on the sport of wrestling, called Winning Leg Wrestling. After 22 years of coaching at UB, he went on to coach for seven seasons at Rochester Institute of Technology before becoming the head coach for the RIT Tigers where he coached 8 All Americans.
In 2007, Coach Stever was inducted into the New York State Chapter of the National Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame. He was previously inducted into the University at Buffalo, Corning-Painted Post High School and The New York State Wrestling Halls of Fame for his years of dedication and service to the sport of wrestling. He achieved the highest honor for an NCAA wrestling coach in 2014, earning induction into the National Coaches Division III Wrestling Coaches' Association Hall of Fame.
Scott was devoted to his family and friends. He was the type of guy who would come at any moment for those in need, always volunteering his time to help others. He was very involved in his church community at Greece Assembly of God and serving weekly at Mission Share. He loved spending time studying and teaching the bible, playing and "coaching" his new found sport, as well as planning camping trips with his long-time camping friends.
There will be a celebration of Life for friends and family on Friday, March 31, at 10:00 am at Greece Assembly of God,750 Long Pond Road, Rochester NY, 14612. All are welcome to a Luncheon following Scott's celebration. Live streamed at greeceassembly.online.church.
