Eleven Cortland Wrestlers Perfect at Season-Opening Lycoming Invitational

WILLIAMSPORT, PA. - The Cortland wrestling team opened its 2023-24 season Sunday at the Lycoming College Invitational. The non-team scoring event featured seven schools competing in round-robin brackets broken down by freshman/sophomore and junior/senior groups.

Of Cortland's 29 wrestlers at the event, 11 were undefeated with 3-0 records - three in the junior/senior groups and eight in the freshman/sophomore section.

Cortland's junior/senior 3-0 wrestlers were J.C. Cardenas (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) at 133 pounds, with two technical falls, Dan Cassera (East Setauket/Ward Melville) at 165 pounds, with one pin, and Leo Rabinovich (Staten Island/Tottenville) at 285 pounds, with a pin and two major decisions.

Two Red Dragons in the freshman/sophomore section went 3-0 with three pins - Wyatt Gentzel (Bellport) at 125 pounds and Culley Bellino (Canastota) at 141 pounds. Christian Lievano (East Setauket/Ward Melville) pinned two opponents during his 3-0 day at 125 and Angelo Centrone (Mahopac) won all three of his matches by technical fall at 149 pounds.

Tristan Robinson-July (Ossining) was 3-0 with two technical falls and a major decision at 165 pounds and Nick Noto (Lima/Honeoye Falls-Lima) went 3-0 with a tech fall and two majors at 149 pounds. Justin Klein (Miller Place) registered a pin and a technical fall among his three wins at 165 and Shane Walczyk (Eden) had a pin and a major decision during his 3-0 finish.

In addition to Cortland's 11 undefeated wrestlers, Rocco Futia (Wallkill) also earned three wins as he finished 3-1 with two tech falls and a major decision at 133 pounds in the freshman/sophomore section.

Cortland returns to action on Saturday at the Roger Williams Invitational in Rhode Island.
