Cornell Wrestling Starts Season Strong at Journeymen Classic; #1-Arujau Upset

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Junior Julian Ramirez, sophomore Brett Ungar and freshman Meyer Shapiro highlighted a strong showing for the Cornell wrestling team as it began its season at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic on Sunday. Ramirez and Ungar won their respective A brackets, while Shapiro, making his much-anticipated collegiate debut, dominated the 157B bracket.

In 165A, Ramirez took down Derek Fields (NC State) 16-1 by technical fall, Luke Ahrberg (NC State) 11-1 by major decision and Jake Logan (Lehigh) 8-5 by decision en route to a first-place finish. Ungar beat teammate Greg Diakomihalis 2-1, Troy Hohman (NC State) 7-2 and Diego Sotelo 3-2 to claim first place in 125A.

Shapiro, ranked as the nation's top recruit in the 2023 class by Intermat.com, beat Micah Hanau (Army) 15-3 by fall, Rhise Royster (LIU) 8-2 by decision and Jude Swisher (LIU) 15-0 by technical fall.

Diakomihalis beat Troy Hohman (NC State) 9-7 by decision before losing to Ungar. Penn's Ryan Miller beat Diakomihalis by fall in the third-place match.


133A

Reigning NCAA champion Vito Arujau recorded an 11-2 major decision over Mason Leiphart (Franklin & Marshall) and a 12-3 major decision over Michael Colaiocco (Penn). He finished second after falling 8-4 to Ryan Crookham (Lehigh).

133E

Freshman Ethan Qureshi finished in first place in 133E, winning 8-1 over Colt Schrader (Army), 3-1 over Chad Ozias (Pitt-Johnstown) and 5-2 over Conor Collins (Army).

141A

Sophomore Vince Cornella finished in fourth place. He recorded a 20-3 technical fall in his first match and then fell 4-1 in overtime to 2023 All-American Beau Bartlett (Penn State). He lost his last match by medical forfeit.

Freshman Mark Botello finished in fourth place and went 1-2 overall.

149B

Junior Ethan Fernandez claimed first place with an 8-2 win over Connor Pierce (Penn State), a 6-3 win over Owen Reinsel (Lehigh) and a 4-1 win over Nick Stampolus (Buffalo).

Junior Cole Handlovic, who went 1-2, finished in fourth.

Sophomore Nate Wade won all three of his matches to finish in first. He picked up a technical fall in his final match, beating Cole Stone (Army) 20-4.

Junior Wyatt Yapoujian won all three of his bouts to finish in first. He picked up a pair of major decisions.

Freshman Benny Rodgers recorded a first-place finish with a 4-0 performance. He picked up a pair of technical falls and a 7-2 decision over teammate Owen Finn, who finished second in the pool.

Junior Colt Barley finished in third place in 174B. He won 15-0 by technical fall over Kent McCombs (Army).

174C

Sophomore Christian Hansen and senior Benny Baker squared off in the 174C final bout, with Baker winning 4-0 by decision.

Junior Justin Mayes finished in second, falling to Dillon Sheehy (Army) in the first-place match. He won 8-2 over teammate Liam Finn and recorded an 18-2 technical fall over Lucas Esposito (Sacred Heart).

Senior Luke Gorg finished in third place, taking down Jacob Sabol (Pitt-Johnstown) in an 8-0 major decision.

Freshman Aiden Hanning finished in fifth place.

Freshman Eric Carlson went 2-1 en route to a third-place finish. He defeated Thomas Godbee (Army) in a 6-1 decision in the third-place match.

Senior Lewis Fernandes beat Austin Kolhofer (Army) by decision and Jeff Crooks (Harvard) by fall before losing to Keaton Kluevers (Hofstra). He finished in second place.

Freshman Ashton Davis took down Tyler O'Boyle (Franklin & Marshall) by technical fall and Ethan Miller (Lock Haven) by major decision. He claimed first place with a 2-0 decision over Isaiah Vance (Pitt-Johnstown).
