Burgess Shines at Midlands

EVANSTON, IL - Kaleb Burgess won four matches to advance to the semifinals, highlighting UB wrestling's effort at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships. Burgess is one of 16 Bulls competing at the prestigious even hosted by Northwestern University.

Burgess earned a spot on the podium with a sixth place finish in his first trip ot Midlands.

Burgess earned his first win of the day by medical forfeit over Rutgers Michael Cetta. In the second round, Burgess had one of the biggest upsets of the day, defeating fourth-seed Joseph Zargo of Wisconsin, 9-8. Burgess set the tone in the first period with a takedown and a three-point nearfall.

In the third round, Burgess earned a 4-3 decision over 13th-seeded Ryan Moore of Thomas More. Burgess did all of his scoring in the third period with an escape and a takedown.

In the quarterfinals, Burgess upset his third ranked opponent, taking down 12th-seed Sam Cartella, 2-1. A two-point nearfall, early in the second period, was all Burgess needed to advance to the semifinals.

Burgess lost to 16-seed Ty Whalen in the semifinals on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Chase Kranitz won three matches before being eliminated in the consolation bracket. The 184-pounder defeated Air Force's Owen Heiser by tech fall, West Virginia's Ian Bush, 4-2, and Purdue's Macarthy Parkinson, 6-3.

Freshman Max Elton won two matches in the 125-pound bracket in his first trip to Midlands. He earned a 7-4 decision over North Central's Ethan Specht. He advanced past Michigan State's Nick Corday in the next round.
