Ithaca Places First in Garden City at the NYS Championships

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The Ithaca College wrestling team showed out on Saturday as they finished 1st out of 20 teams at the New York State Collegiate Championships that was hosted at Nassau Community College on January 20. The Bombers amassed 188 total team points across the open divisions as they saw Isaias Torres finish first at 133 lbs., Jackson Gray earned a second-place result at 174 lbs., and Jeremy Mazzella ended up winning his third-place match.

Torres' first place bout proved to be exciting as it was all squared up between him and Alfred's Zach Levey but Torres ended up sticking his opponent and came away with the 7-1 sudden victory. Jeremy Mazzella's third place match was against Army Prep's Sam Sorenson as they both felt each other out before Mazzella came away winning by decision (4-2).

Ithaca also had several of its wrestlers competing in the freshman/sophomore brackets. Cosmo Damiani fell to Oneonta's Billy Colloca in their fifth-place match with Colloca earning the 14-11 win via decision. Francisco Muriel battled his way through his opponents at 133 and ended up facing off against a familiar for in Oswego's Michael Santore who ended up winning by a fall in 2:13.

Both Ryan Galka and Brian Bienus ended up earning the most team points as they racked up 19 apiece finishing first and second in their respective weight classes in the freshman/sophomore bracket. Galka was easily able to handle Gavin Proffitt in his championship bout winning via a 20-9 major decision. It was a much tighter between Bienus and Hofstra's Greyson Harris as they went back-and-forth but Harris scored the crucial point as he won by decision (8-7).

Up next, the Bombers will host The College of New Jersey for a dual in Ben Light Gymnasium on Saturday, January 27. Wrestling is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
