OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team won the last two matches of their dual against Oswego to defeat the Lakers on the road, 21-19, Wednesday evening. Sophomore Carson LiCastri (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow High School) and senior Jhordyn Innocent both recorded a 7-3 decision in their respective matches to secure the win. The victory improved the Red Dragons to 12-8 in dual matches this season and dropped the Lakers to 5-11 overall.
Freshman Billy Colloca (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon Senior High) kicked the dual off with a 2:54 fall over Michael Hade at 125 lbs. Junior Danny Poggi (West Islip/West Islip) beat Michael Santore 9-6 in sudden victory at 133 lbs. Poggi was trailing before he registered two takedowns, including one with seconds left in regulation, then scored a takedown in extra time.
Senior Max Yahre (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) and freshman Matt Coffey () both won via decisions to give Oneonta a 15-11 lead. Yahre defeated Landen Smith, 7-2, at 157 lbs. with a takedown in the first and third period. Coffey scored a takedown and a two-point nearfall in the first period then another takedown in the second to beat Steven Felice at 165 lbs, 8-6.
Down 19-15, the Red Dragons had LiCastri and Innocent pick up clutch decisions for the match win. LiCastri battled against Anthony Cascen at 197 lbs. He scored the first point of the match off an escape with two minutes left. Cascen recorded a takedown with 33 seconds left, however LiCastri reversed it and scored a couple nearfalls at the end for the win. Innocent went jumped ahead 6-0 at the end of the first period after a takedown then an immediate three-point nearfall. He held off Kevin Arriaza in the final two periods for a 7-3 decision at 285 lbs. for the match victory.
The Red Dragons return to action Saturday, February 10, for a dual at RIT at noon.
