DePrez Defeats No. 7 Cardenas, Bearcats Fall to Cornell in Final Dual of Season

NEWS

Brevin Cassella also earns team-leading 24th overall win for Binghamton

ITHACA, N.Y. - No. 9 Lou DePrez earned a statement victory by defeating No. 7 Jacob Cardenas, but the Binghamton wrestling team was ultimately defeated by No. 8 Cornell 33-6 Sunday at Friedman Wrestling Center. The loss ends a five-match winning streak for the Bearcats.

"That was a really big win for Louie today to position him within the EIWA and the national field," said Binghamton Head Coach Kyle Borshoff. "So hopefully he can keep that momentum rolling at the EIWAs. We should have a number of guys who are seeded highly there."

The Bearcats kept it close against the Big Red early, as the dual was tied at 6 after the first four matches. But the Big Red went on to win the final six matches to secure the victory and finish the regular season with an undefeated conference record of 6-0.

"Duals like this are always tough, and we needed it" said Borshoff. "We came off a nice, long win streak and Cornell is a really great team. Wrestling these guys right now really brings us back to Earth a little bit, and I think that's a good think going into EIWAs."

Highlights
In the second match between ranked wrestlers, DePrez defeated Cardenas to earn his 10th dual win of the season, and 19th overall. He will enter the EIWA Championships looking to win his 20th match of the season, which would mark the fifth time in his career that he has won that many matches in a season.
Brevin Cassella opened the dual by defeating Brody Oleksak 5-2. With the win, Cassella retook the team lead in overall wins with 24, while also extending his team lead in dual wins by moving up to 12.
