Five Bearcat Wrestlers Selected as NWCA Men's Scholar All-Americans

NEWS

Represents a program record for Binghamton since joining Division I in 2001

VESTAL, N.Y. - Adding another significant accomplishment to a memorable season, five members of the Binghamton wrestling team were selected as Scholar All-Americans by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), the group announced Friday. It represents the largest number of Binghamton wrestlers receiving this honor in one season since the program joined Division I in 2001.

Lou DePrez, Cory Day, Jacob Nolan, Carter Baer and Michael Zarif each were among a total of 338 wrestlers from 78 institutions across the country to be chosen for the honor. The award recognizes exceptional student-athletes who demonstrate excellence in academics and athletics.

"I'm incredibly proud of the way our team has performed in the classroom this year," said Binghamton Head Coach Kyle Borshoff. "It has been amazing to watch the growth of the program academically, as well as athletically, over the last few years!"

The previous program record for most Scholar All-Americans in a season was three, which was set each year from 2021-23. Nolan, who received the honor each of those three years, is named a Scholar All-American for the fourth time in his career, another program record. He was previously tied with Joe Doyle, who received the honor three times in his career from 2020-22.

This is the second time Day and Zarif have each been named Scholar All-Americans. Both wrestlers previously received the honor in 2023 along with Nolan. Meanwhile, this marks the first time that either Baer or DePrez have won this award.

Binghamton is coming off a strong 2023-24 season on the mat, where the team won its most overall duals (9) and EIWA duals (7) since 2018-19 (10-3, 8-2 EIWA). The Bearcats also defeated a top 20 Division I team for the first time in program history with an 18-17 win over No. 18 Navy on Jan. 21, and won its first dual against a Big Ten opponent since 2017 with a 21-15 victory at Northwestern on Feb. 16. Day, DePrez, Nolan and Brevin Cassella each represented Binghamton at the 2024 NCAA Wrestling Championships. Cassella, DePrez, and Day each won two matches at the tournament, making it the first time since 2012 that at least three Bearcat wrestlers won at least two matches at nationals.
