Monroe County 2024-2025 Wrestling Preview
By Craig Kaper, Chairman

The Lightweights: (101-108)

As always there will be new faces at the lightest weight classes and these new faces could establish themselves as contenders by post season.

At the top of the returning list are two Hilton wrestlers who both claimed Supers Gold, Lucas Yeager and Jon Testa. Yeager had a great run last February battling his way to the top of the podium and avenging early season setbacks along the way. Testa too played avenger as he came out on top at the 108 lb class. Section V did not make the NYS podium at the 101 or 108 weight class and these two will be looking to stake claim to All-State honors this season.

The two additional qualifiers from a year ago are Connor Guffey of Webster Thomas and Koray Kocaoglu of Pittsford. This was Guffey’s second trip to the state capitol and he will be determined to make it a third. John Winseman was also a state qualifier a year ago. He will help front the lineup of an extremely talented group from HFL.

Other top finishers include Class A1 champ at 108, Drew Aparo of Victor and Vitali Pushnin of Rush Henrietta. Both wrestlers came on strong at the end of the season and coming so close to wearing the purple, you can bet both will be looking to make that next step. Jackson Harrison, the A2 champ at 108, along with teammates Camden Aruck and Aiden Vollmer will lead a very good Webster Schroeder team. Hilton has another strong lightweight returning in Jake Knorr, who made the supers podium last season. Fairport boasts two strong lightweight performers in Bennett Palmeri and Marco Provenzano, both wrestlers claimed 4th place honors a year ago.

Other returning lightweights looking to add to last year’s performance are; Kellen Welch and Garrett Ubbink of Canandaigua, Tyler Williams and Jayden Miesch of Brockport, Luke Koppers of Rush Henrietta, Giancarlo Costanza and Logan Morse of Churchville.

Certification results will most likely move many of these wrestlers into different weight classes, but the 101 and 108 reps for Section V this year should be State Podium threats.

Light Middleweights: (116-131)

This weight range is loaded with talent and multiple state medalists and qualifiers. Leading the way will be Chris Noto out of HFL. The grappling star finished on the state podium once again and will be returning in search of the state crown. Richard Wood of Brockport also finished on the podium in Albany. He is now a multi time state medal winner and he too has the potential to
capture gold in March.

Other returning state qualifiers are the pair out of Fairport; Teague Wolcott and Trey LeChase. Both of these wrestlers have the potential to podium in Albany this season and will be looking to seal a return trip. Ryan Cieslinski is a 2 time state qualifier and he will be leading a resurgent Spencerport squad. Another wrestler who owns some state hardware from past seasons is HFL’s Andrew Spaulding, he will be focused on making a return trip after coming so close last
season.

Other Supers places finishers include; Angelo Attardi of Victor, Cam Guffey and Collin Masten of Thomas, Devin Weber and Dan O’Dea of Greece, Adam Gerby of Pittsford, Spencer Palmeri of Fairport, James Hargather of Hilton, and Liam Torpey of Schroeder.

Also in the mix are a host of wrestlers to keep an eye on; Carter Walworth (C-C), Dominic Ianniello (WS), Josh Jonason (Pitt), Matthew Durnell (BP), Jessie Schmidt (BP), Owen Courtney (BP), Yoav Weinstein (BR), Henry Peters (BR), Jacob Hill (SP), Michael Soto (SP).

Middle Weights: (138-160)

Again, this is a talented group. They will no doubt be led by Samson McKissick-Staley of Pittsford. The Pittsford grappler made a strong run in Albany a year ago and battled his way to the finals. Ultimately he came up a little short and he will be looking to climb to the top this season. McKissick-Staley will be accompanied by his teammate Zach Gerby who returns to action after a state medal performance a year ago. Two additional state medal winners will include HFL’s Waylan Winseman and Jacob McVige. These two are both seasoned veterans who have the ability to capture gold in March. Yet another state medalist is Jackson Koppers of Rush Henrietta. Koppers has been a workhorse for the RH program and will look to climb higher on the podium this season.

Two additional state qualifiers looking for hardware are Hilton’s Phil Testa and Brockport’s William Wood. Both of these grapplers had a strong season a year ago.

Other Supers place finishers include; Ben Burrows of Pittsford, Tyler Wolfe of Canandaigua, Philly Provenzano and Chase Sackett of Fairport, Blake Donohue of Attica-Batavia, Cameron Mosher of HFL, Maximus Taylor and Ian Pitt of Schroeder, and Eric Mclean of Thomas.

Also in the mix are; Jack Iota (WT), Aaron Agosti (Pen), Braydon Albro (Pen), Harper Capuano (Iron), Andrew Jeffers (C-C), Jayden Gourdine (C-C), Virgil Joseph (WS), Ethan Clark (WS), Kris Mihalitis (Pitt), Preston Jackson (Pitt), Carson Frarey (CA), Ben White (F).

Upper Weights: (170-285)

The big name here is Elijah Diakomihalis, this grappler out of Hilton is not only a returning State Champion but he is also a World Medal Winner!! It will certainly be exciting to see Diakomihalis in action this season as he looks to repeat!

Three additional state qualifiers return in this weight range. Mason Depew of Canandaigua was a qualifier a year ago at 190 and will look to step foot on the podium come March. Zane Kropman will lead his Penfield squad this season, this talented 10th grader has the ability to make a deep run in Albany. Fairport welcomes back Blaze Waters at heavyweight. Fresh off the gridiron, Waters will be ready to scrap.

Additional Supers place finishers include; Mason Naple of Victor, Anthony Cimino of Thomas, Dylan Fitzgerald and Jordan Wickham of Brockport, Tyler Murrell of Attica-Batavia, August Youngstrum of HFL, Andrew Frost of Churchville, Jamison Mancari of Rush Henrietta, and Thomas Reed of Schroeder.

Also in the mix are; Eli Ricci (V), Cam Paul (V), David Santoli (WS), Ashton Allen (WS), Jeremiah House (WS), Jeremiah Childs (A-B), Dominic Darch (A-B), Tyler Stewart (WT), Porter Vega (SP), Carmello Miranda (BR), Nicolas Marciano (Pen), Nathan Masters (Pen), Ahmet Gundogdu (Pen), Owen Smalline (Iron).

December 20th and 21st will be the Monroe County Wrestling Championships at Webster Schroeder High School.

We are looking forward to an exciting season and we wish all the wrestlers and their teams the best of luck this year!!!!!
