Wrestler improves his finish at in-season tournament from a year ago, when he finished eighth
LAS VEGAS – Brevin Cassella added two more wins on Saturday to finish in fifth place at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
"Brevin did a nice job this weekend getting a number of quality wins," said Binghamton Wrestling Head Coach Kyle Borshoff. "Brevin has gotten better every season and continues to improve. We have to make some adjustments when competing against some of the very best guys in the weight. But a fifth place finish here proves that he can compete with and beat the best guys in the country."
Cassella, who went 3-1 at the opening sessions of the prestigious in-season tournament on Friday, continued his run by first shutting out No. 14 Jared Simma of Northern Iowa 2-0. With the match scoreless in the second period and Simma on top, Cassella flipped his body to gain the advantage and earn two points for the reversal. He would defend his lead for the remainder of the match to win and advance to the consolation semifinals.
After being defeated by No. 17 Garrett Thompson of Ohio in the consolation semifinals 11-1, Cassella would face off against fellow EIWA wrestler No. 16 Danny Wask of Navy in the fifth place match. This match was also scoreless in the second period, but with time winding down, Cassella was able to get a near fall against Wask and earn four points before the period ended. Cassella added an escape and a takedown in the third period to lock up the 9-0 major decision and a fifth place finish.
This is an improvement of three spots for Cassella, who finished eighth at the Cliff Keen invite in 2023 at 165 lbs. Having moved up a weight class to 174 lbs., Cassella finished this weekend with a record of 5-2 with wins against four ranked opponents.
Binghamton finished the tournament 21st with 28.5 points.
