EMORY, Va. – Making the trip down south to Emory & Henry University for the Wasps Women's Open, the D'Youville University women's wrestling team had three wrestler place in the tournament.
Leading the way for the Saints was Madison Wellen (East Berlin, Pa./Wyoming Seminary), who placed second at 138 pounds. After a bye in the first round, Wellen got a tech. fall over Carney Wyble of East Stroudsburg, 10-0. In the quarterfinals, Wellen earned the tech. fall over Bryanne Kaminsky of Lindsey Wilson, 10-0. Wellen continued her dominance in the semifinals, getting another tech. fall, this time beating Kyra Tomlinson of Greensboro by a score of 12-2. In the championship match, Wellen was bested by Kori Campbell of Lindsey Wilson.
Also placing for DYU was Ollie Ridling (San Antonio, Texas/Winston Churchill) in the 110-pound weight class and Annika Lopez (San Antonio, Texas/San Antonio Johnson) in the 117-pound weight class, each placing fourth.
Ridling was bested in the first round before picking up a win over Dusti Casperson of Southern Virginia in the consolation round. In the consolation semifinals, Ridling defeated Haley Viars of King William via fall in 4:31. In the third-place match, Ridling was bested by Ryleigh Hayes of the University of the Cumberlands.
Lopez started her day with a fall over Natalia Sanchez of Emory & Henry, needing 1:35 to do so. In the quarterfinals, Lopez picked up the fall over Madeline Ridge of East Stroudsburg in 3:58. In semifinals, Lopez was bested by Isabella Washington-Vaquez of East Stroudsburg via fall. Moving onto the consolation side of the bracket, Lopez got the win over Alexis Deagle of Marymount in 41 seconds. In the third-place match, Lopez was defeated by Charlee Shuler of Presbyterian.
Zoe Kip (Liberty, N.Y./Liberty) also had a solid day on the match, getting three wins in the 180-pound weight class. Alexis Brua (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) and Alessandra Elliott (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) each had two victories on the day in the 124 pound and 138 pound class, respectively.
The Saints will be off until January 12th when they travel to Ursinus College for the Ursinus Duals.
