Fairport adds first-ever all-girls wrestling team

NEWS

FAIRPORT, N.Y. — This is a milestone for girls' sports in Section V as it welcomes even more all-girls wrestling teams to the state roster this season. Fairport is the latest region to add varsity girls wrestling as a new winter sport. The National Wrestling Coaches Association says women's wrestling is one of the fastest-growing sports at the scholastic and collegiate levels.

Penfield, Alexander, Red Creek, Canandaigua, Midlakes, Fairport and Webster have all-girls wrestling teams
Fairport High School senior Aubrey Lamb was a fourth grader when she started wrestling. Her only option was to wrestle with the boys.

“I just grew up with it, it is all I know. My family was always into wrestling,” said Lamb. “It is a lot harder wrestling boys. They are just naturally stronger, so going into wrestling girls has been good. It feels better. You are not getting overpowered by pure strength.”

For the first time, she’s on an all-girls wrestling team at Fairport High School. It’s one of seven teams offering girls wrestling in Section V. They’re competing in sanctioned tournaments.

Senior Sophie Michaud has wrestled on the boys’ team since freshman year.

“It is a really tough sport but when you win your match you are so proud of yourself. It is more of an individual sport than any other. So, when you win you are like I did that, that was my win,” said Michaud. “I think the most fun move is a headlock and hip toss.”

Girls wrestle freestyle. It’s Olympic-style wrestling with two, three-minute periods. Points come fast and you can throw. Weight classes are 94 to 235 pounds.

Fairport co-coaches Tim Herman and Sarah Gardner say they have an eclectic team of athletes, some are experienced wrestlers, some play other sports and are giving it a go and others have never played on any high school sports team.

“Yes, I am very proud of them. A lot of them never stepped on a mat until mid-November when we first started practice. I do not know if they notice their growth, but you see them getting better every day,” said Herman.

Herman’s daughter Violet is also on the team. She’s a freshman at Fairport.

For these female athletes, it’s more than just time on the mat, it’s perseverance and hard work to inspire more girls to give the sport a try.

The New York State Girls Wrestling coordinator says 2,104 girls across the state are certified to wrestle this season. The schedule includes tournaments and dual meets. Fairport will host teams from around the state on Saturday, Jan. 18 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Fairport High School.
