CAMBRIDGE, Mass. and PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Cornell wrestling team put a pair of dominant performances up to open the 2025 Ivy League campaign, going 2-0 on Saturday with a 39-3 triumph at Harvard and a 35-3 victory at Brown. The Big Red (5-1, 2-0 Ivy) continued its dominance over the past three decades, running its conference win streak to 17 and making it 109-1 in its past 110 Ancient Eight matches dating back to 2001.
Big Red wrestlers at the top eight weights in the lineup all went 2-0 on the day, with Julian Ramirez (165), Simon Ruiz (174) and Chris Foca (184) winning both of their bouts with bonus points. Second-ranked Meyer Shapiro claimed a tech fall win over Harvard and was able to grind out a solid 7-2 victory over nationally-ranked Blake Saito of Brown in the nightcap.
HARVARD DUAL
The Crimson earned a hard-fought victory at 125 to kick off the dual as No. 21 Diego Sotelo was able to squeeze his way past Marcello Milani, 6-3, but the Big Red quickly took control and claimed seven of its nine victories with bonus points attached. The highlight was Julian Ramirez's first period fall at 165 pounds, though dominant second period tech falls from Meyer Shapiro at 157 and Simon Ruiz at 174 and a third period tech by Chris Foca at 184 proved Cornell's sharpness. The Big Red upped its lead in the all-time series to 62-9 with its 23rd consecutive victory in the series.
BROWN DUAL
Milani earned a major decision victory at 125 pounds to give Cornell a lead it would never surrender, though the Bears made it tough for the Big Red over the first four weights. After the Bears claimed a narrow decision at 133, both Josh Saunders at 141 and Ethan Fernandez at 149 won nailbiters, though in very different ways. Saunders picked up a takedown and four swipes in the third to claim a 16-15 win over Joey Iamunno, while Fernandez was able to take down Ethan Mojena in overtime to break a 1-1 tie. From there, the hammers did work as Cornell claimed the final eight wins with four coming with bonus points. Mikey Dellagatta was able to turn his opponent at 197 pounds for a second period fall.
