Binghamton's Day, Garcia Earn Ranked Wins Against No. 9 Cornell

NEWS

Bearcats are ultimately defeated by the Big Red 29-9

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton wrestling team won three bouts against No. 9 Cornell Saturday at the West Gym, with both Cory Day and Ivan Garcia each earning a victory against a ranked opponent. The Bearcats were ultimately defeated by the Big Red 29-9.

"As a team, I thought we had effort," said Binghamton Wrestling Head Coach Kyle Borshoff. "I thought we wrestled tough in a lot of the matches."

"Ivan is doing a great job this season for us," Borshoff added. "It's one of the things that Ivan has demonstrated a ton of growth within our program, and watching a guy like him having success this season really goes to show what happens in development here."

Highlights
• In his battle with No. 17 Ethan Fernandez, Garcia held his own against the reigning EIWA champion. With the score tied at one in the third period after both wrestlers got an escape, Fernandez received his second stalling call late in the frame, giving Garcia his second point. Garcia held off Fernandez in the final seconds to secure his third win against a ranked opponent this season. He previously defeated No. 28 Kal Miller of Maryland 2-1 and No. 31 Richard Fedalen of Columbia 13-5 at Journeymen Wrestling's Armbar on Jan. 5.
• For the final bout of the day, Cory Day defeated No. 33 Ashton Davis 3-2 in the heavyweight match. Day went up 2-0 after completing a reversal on Davis in the second period. While Davis came back to tie the match at two, Day gained more than one minute of riding time to earn an extra point and win the bout 3-2.
• Binghamton's first victory came from Micah Roes at 133 lbs. Roes defeated Ethan Qureshi 8-5 to bring the Bearcats within one team point of the Big Red.
