Burns, Vandenberg Lead Cardinals With 2nd-Place Finishes At John Summa Invite

BEREA, Ohio – Sophomore Braydon Vandenberg and senior Jackson Burns led the St. John Fisher wrestling team with second-place finishes in their weight classes in the John Summa Invitational on Saturday.

The Cardinals placed eighth in the team race with 70 points. Host Baldwin Wallace dominated the event, placing first with 197 points, 71 more than second-place Case Western Reserve.

Vandenberg (197 pounds) started his day with a 10-6 major decision over James Standish (West Liberty) before pinning his next two opponents, Karson Nail (Otterbein) and Geoffry Kaminsky (Ohio Wesleyan). In the championship match, he lost a hard-fought bout 7-2 by decision to Joseph Petrella (Baldwin Wallace).

Burns pinned two of his first three opponents – Zach Babiczuk (West Liberty) and Seth Phillips (Thiel) – to reach the championship match at 285 pounds. He lost to Nick Franco (Brockport) 10-4 by decision to finish the day.

Timothy Pescatore (125, 8th), Otto Davidson (165, 8th), Charlie Rossner (184, 6th) and Judson Ferris (197, 8th) also placed for the Cardinals.
