BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University wrestling team overcame an early deficit en route to a 21-20 road victory over SUNY Brockport on Friday night at the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.
The Cardinals improved to 7-3 in dual action this season and beat Brockport for the second straight year. The Golden Eagles, 6-1 overall, suffered their first dual loss of the season.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 9-0 lead behind Liam Bullock's major decision at 125 pounds over Daniel Parkulo and Matthew Reehil's technical fall at 133 pounds over Carl Santariello. Fisher began climbing out of that hole at 141, as Trevor Bishop cut the deficit to five (9-4) with a major decision over Jaden Friel. His brother, Torin, put the Cardinals in front 10-9 at 149 pounds, pinning Alex Smith in 3:56.
At 157 pounds, Paul Lichter extended the Cardinals' lead to 15-9 with a 19-1 technical fall over Max Morrison. Dylan Devine followed that up with an 8-7 decision over Vandervain Way at 165 pounds to extend that advantage to nine, 18-9.
Brockport cut Fisher's lead to two points with a decision at 174 and a major decision at 184. Braydon Vandenberg stopped that run at 197 pounds, giving the Cardinals some breathing room (21-16) entering the final match with a 10-3 decision over Simon Lingle.
Jackson Burns fell to Nick Franco 9-1 by major decision at 285 pounds, but he allowed the Cardinals to hang on for the one-point victory by avoiding a technical fall loss.
