Heavyweight gets career-high 13th pin of the season in return to his hometown
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Cory Day made a grand return to his hometown of Buffalo, N.Y., by picking up his career-high 13th pin of the season, as the heavyweight helped the Binghamton wrestling team defeat Buffalo 29-10 Sunday at Alumni Arena.
"The team did a nice job today in our dual," said Binghamton Wrestling Head Coach Kyle Borshoff. "Overall, I thought that we were aggressive and pushed the pace. We had a couple of areas that we need to focus on over the next few weeks. It is always nice to come away with a win against an in-state rival."
Highlights
• In the heavyweight's homecoming, Day closed out the dual in dominant fashion. He opened his bout against Robbie Unruh by jumping ahead to a 15-2 lead by the end of the first period. Day, who began the second period riding Unruh, immediately rolled his opponent on his shoulders for the fall. The Iroquois High School graduate entered the week ranked fourth among Division I wrestlers in falls. He has now surpassed his previous career high of 12 falls from the 2023-24 season.
• The Bearcats picked up bonus points in five bouts Sunday, with Brevin Cassella securing a 16-1 technical fall against Ty Raines. Micah Roes, who returned to the mat after not competing the previous weekend, was one of three Binghamton wrestlers to record a major decision. The other two were Carter Baer and Nate Lucier.
• Carson Wagner reached 20 wins in a season for the first time in his collegiate career after he opened the dual with a 7-2 victory over Max Elton. The sophomore won 18 matches in his first season in Vestal in 2023-24.
• By defeating Buffalo, Binghamton won its 10th dual of the season. This is the first time that the Bearcats have won at least 10 duals in a season since 2018-19, when the team went 10-3.
