WILLIAMSPORT, PA. – Cortland junior Angelo Centrone (Mahopac) won the 149-pound title to earn a berth into the NCAA Division III Championships and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament during the second day of competition at the NCAA Division III Region 2 Wrestling Championships. The regional was hosted by Lycoming College.
Centrone, ranked third nationally at 149 pounds, will bring a 27-0 record to the national championship meet, which will be held March 14-15 at Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, R.I. The top three finishers in each weight class at the regional punched their tickets to nationals.
After winning two matches Saturday, Centrone opened Sunday's action with a 22-7 technical fall in 5:26 over Carmen Cortese of Stevens Institute. In the 149-pound title match, Centrone faced Centenary's Xavier Pena. The match was scoreless after one period and Pena led 1-0 entering the third. Centrone tied the match with an early escape in the third and took a 4-1 lead with a takedown with 1:27 left. Pena picked up a penalty point and an escape to close to within 4-3, but Centrone registered a takedown and a 2-point near fall in the closing seconds for a 9-3 victory.
Two other Red Dragons competed on Sunday and earned top-eight finishes.
Sophomore Rocco Futia (Wallkill) finished sixth at 133 pounds with a 2-3 record. He was 2-0 on Saturday but lost in the semifinals Sunday to Daniel Haws of Centenary, 5-0. Futia also was defeated by Lucas Torre of New Jersey City and Michael Santore of Oswego, the latter in the fifth-place match.
Sophomore Robby Cunningham (Miller Place) finished seventh at 184 pounds with a 3-2 record. After going 2-1 on Saturday, Cunningham lost his opening match Sunday, 6-5, to Christopher Nuss of Wilkes. He bounced back to pin Brent Perry of Alfred State in 3:21 in the seventh-place match.
Cortland finished 12th out of 19 schools in the final team standings with 53.5 points. Stevens was the regional team champion with 153 points, followed by Ithaca (115.5) and Wilkes (112).
