Lauren Winfield made Springville-Griffith athletics history twice last week. First, she became the first female Griffin wrestler to compete in the NYSPHSAA Championships in Albany. The Griffin wrestling tri-captain then earned the first Griffin female State podium finish with a sixth-place finish while fulfilling a season goal at MVP Arena in Albany on Feb. 26.
In just his first season as Springville’s varsity wrestling coach, Bruce Hitchcock absorbed as much information he could in the girls freestyle format and helped Winfield through the season to aid the junior in claiming her historic week.
