Binghamton’s Season Ends at NCAA Wrestling Championships

NEWS

PHILADELPHIA – The 2024-25 season for the Binghamton wrestling team has ended as both Brevin Cassella and Cory Day were eliminated from the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships during the second day of the tournament Friday at the Wells Fargo Center.

With both wrestlers starting the day in the second round of the consolation bracket, Cassella recorded his second win of the tournament with an 8-0 major decision over No. 28 Clayton Whiting of Minnesota. However, Cassella was then eliminated by No. 14 Matthew Singleton of NC State in the third round via a 5-3 decision. Day, meanwhile, was defeated by No. 13 Seth Nevills of Maryland in a 17-2 technical fall to end the heavyweight's run at the national tournament.

The eliminations bring an end to the storied careers of both Cassella and Day. Cassella finishes his time at Binghamton with 102 wins, 16 major decisions, 12 technical falls and eight pins. The Clinton, Mass., native reached the podium at the EIWA Championships in all five of his seasons with the Bearcats, winning the 2025 title at 174 lbs., while becoming the first Binghamton competitor to be given the Coaches' Trophy for being voted on as the outstanding wrestler of the tournament. Cassella also qualified for nationals in each of his final four seasons, winning a combined five matches at the tournament.

Day ends his Binghamton career with 82 wins, 36 pins, seven major decisions and one technical fall. In each of his final two seasons in Vestal, the heavyweight ranked among the national leaders in falls against Division I opponents. This season, Day finished with a career-high 14 pins, outdoing the 12 he had in 2023-24, with 11 that season coming against Division I wrestlers. Day reached the podium at the EIWAs four times, finishing a career-best second at 285 lbs., in 2025. The Buffalo, N.Y., native ultimately qualified for nationals in each of his final three seasons at Binghamton, winning a combined three matches.

Session Three
In his two matches on Thursday, Cassella was unable to record a takedown. He made sure not to let that streak extend to three bouts. The fifth year wrestler launched himself towards Whiting's legs to take down his opponent and jump out to a 3-0 lead with just over a minute left in the opening period. Cassella then picked up another takedown with 33 seconds left in the second, before adding two points in the third via an escape and riding time to move on.

Standing between Cassella and a trip to Session 4 was Singleton. The NC State wrestler took a 3-0 lead with a takedown in the first period. Cassella responded with a takedown of his own in the second to tie the match at three. Towards the end of the frame, Singleton escaped to take a 4-3 lead into the third. Cassella then let Singleton escape from the bottom to start the third, making it a 5-3 deficit for the Bearcat. Trying to get a go-ahead takedown, Cassella got to Singleton's ankles with seconds remaining, but was unable to bring his opponent down. A challenge brick thrown by Binghamton was ultimately unsuccessful, as Singleton was declared the winner.

Day looked to advance to the third round of the consolation bracket for the second year in a row. But Nevills grabbed an early lead and never looked back, defeating Day in a 17-2 technical fall.
