Four Binghamton Wrestlers Named Scholar All-American

NEWS

Carter Baer, Cory Day, Nate Lucier and Fin Nadeau each earn honor from the NWCA

VESTAL, N.Y. – Four members of the Binghamton wrestling team have been named as a Scholar All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), the organization announced Wednesday.

Carter Baer, Cory Day, Nate Lucier and Fin Nadeau each earned the honor for their success on both the mat and in the classroom. To receive this recognition, a wrestler must meet one of the following criteria:

Finish in the top eight at the NCAA Wrestling Championships and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Qualify for nationals and have a GPA of 3.2 or higher.
Qualify for your conference tournament and have a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Compete in at least 15 matches, win at least 60 percent of them and have a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

This is the second-largest number of NWCA Scholar All-Americans the Bearcats have had in one season. The team set a program record with five back in 2024, with both Baer and Day part of that group. In total, Binghamton has had 38 Scholar All-Americans dating back to 2003.

Day has been named a Scholar All-American each of the last three years. The heavyweight finished his final season at Binghamton with an overall record of 21-8, a career-high 14 pins, finished a career-best second at the EIWA Championships and made his third consecutive trip to nationals. Day is pursuing a master's degree in accounting.

This is the second time Baer has been named a Scholar All-American. After moving back to 165 lbs., before the start of the season, Baer set career highs in overall wins (18), dual wins (10) and major decisions (5) while also tying his career high in technical falls (3). Baer ended the season with his best finish at the EIWA Championships when he placed third, missing an automatic bid for nationals by one spot. He is working towards obtaining a bachelor's degree in human development.

Both Lucier and Nadeau were named Scholar All-Americans for the first time on Wednesday. Lucier recorded 10 wins throughout the season and added three major decisions en route to finishing eighth at the EIWA Championships at 141 lbs., for the second year in a row. He is studying to earn a bachelor's degree in human development.

Nadeau solidified himself as the starter for the Bearcats at 157 lbs. In his third season in Vestal, Nadeau won 11 matches, which includes the first seven dual victories of his collegiate career, and posted two major decisions and one technical fall. Nadeau went on to make his first appearance at the EIWA Championships, winning one match. He is pursing a bachelor's degree in business administration.

The 2024-25 campaign marked another winning season for Binghamton wrestling. The Bearcats finished with a record of 10-9, making it the first time that the Bearcats won at least 10 duals in a season since 2018-19, when they went 10-3. Binghamton also defeated a Big Ten Conference opponent for the second year in a row after beating Maryland 28-10 on Jan. 5. Brevin Cassella also won his first EIWA championship, the fifth individual conference title for the Bearcats since they joined the league in 2013. Cassella's win against No. 1 seed Danny Wask of Navy in the finals at 174 lbs., also marked the 100th win of the Bearcat wrestler's career. Both Cassella and Day ultimately qualified for nationals, with each wrestler winning at least one match at the tournament.
