CLARION, Pa. — The Cornell men's wrestling team opened its 2025 season in strong fashion Sunday, earning eight podium finishes at the Clarion Open. The Big Red showcased depth and early-season form against a loaded field that featured nationally ranked talent from across the country.
Cornell had four wrestlers reach the finals: Tyler Ferrara (133), Jaxon Joy (149), Benny Rodgers (157) and Louie Cerchio (165) — each finishing as runner-up in their respective weight classes. Ferrara highlighted the day with a dominant semifinal performance before falling in a close decision to Ohio State's Benjamin Davino in the championship.
At 149, Joy pinned Ohio State's All-American Ethan Stiles in the semifinals to punch his ticket to the final, while Rodgers and Cerchio each powered through stacked brackets with a combination of bonus-point wins and strong decision victories.
The Big Red also had several wrestlers finish on the podium, including Marcello Milani (125) and Christian Hansen (184), who both placed third. Heavyweight Ashton Davis added a third-place finish after defeating teammate Cash Henderson, who placed fourth. First-year Ryder Yoshitake rounded out Cornell's placers with a sixth-place finish at 157.
The meet gave Cornell a strong benchmark as it opens the season ranked No. 12 nationally. Several unattached athletes from the Spartan Combat RTC, which trains alongside the Big Red, also placed in the top three at multiple weights.
Cornell returns to action next weekend when select wrestlers compete at the National Duals Invitational in Tulsa,OK.
