ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell freshman Jaxon Joy has been named the Ivy League Wrestler of the Week following a standout collegiate debut at the Clarion Open, where he finished second at 149 pounds in a loaded field.
Joy's breakout performance included a statement victory over #4 Ohio State's All-American Ethan Stiles, whom he pinned to advance to the finals in his first collegiate tournament. His strong showing helped set the tone for the Big Red's season-opening weekend and marked him as one of the nation's top freshmen to watch.
"The Ivy League honor is well deserved," said The David Dunlop '59 Head Coach of Wrestling Mike Grey. "Jaxon had a great start to the season. He's an extremely talented freshman who will be a fan favorite with his exciting style and ability to pin. We're excited to see him compete again in a few weeks at National Duals."
A native of Wadsworth, Ohio, Joy was a decorated high school wrestler before joining the Big Red. At Wadsworth High School, he was a four-year letterwinner, three-time state champion, four-time state finalist, and three-year team captain. He also earned Honor Roll recognition for his work in the classroom.
Joy is enrolled in Cornell's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, where he is pursuing a major in Global Development.
Up next, the Big Red will travel west for the National Duals Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev., on Nov. 15–16.
