No. 11 Oneonta Opens Season at Lycoming Invitational, Leonard and Maby Win Respective Classes

WILLIAMSPORT, PA. -- The No. 11 nationally ranked Oneonta wrestling team started the 2025-26 season at the Lycoming Invitational on Sunday. The Red Dragons had senior Avery Leonard (Milford, N.Y./Milford Central) win the 141 lbs. junior/senior division, and sophomore Jackson Maby (Susquehanna, PA/Susquehanna Community) win the 149 lb. freshman/sophomore class. Freshmen Jack Borowiec (), Kingston Strouse (), and Wesly Guzman () all placed second in the 133 lbs., 157 lbs., and 165 lbs. freshman/sophomore class, respectively, while junior 125-lb. Cameron Hinchcliff (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa), junior 141-lb. Trevor Cortwright (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley), and sophomore 165-lb. Ryley Monica (Adams, NY/South Jefferson Central) all secured third place.

The tournament was a non-team scoring event that included No. 9 nationally ranked Castleton, No. 20 ranked Lycoming, Averett University (AU), Emmanuel College (EC), Marymount, Misericordia, Otterbein University (OU), Penn State Behrend (PSB), and Scranton.

Leonard, who was last season's NCAA leader in tech falls, picked up where he left off last year and went 3-0 with three tech falls, where he totaled seven takedowns, five four-point near falls and three three-point near falls in the three wins. He started the day with a 16-1 tech fall in 2:15 against Lycoming's Avery Rosan, then he scored a 17-2 tech fall in 3:00 against AU's Wyatt Parker. In the final, he beat PSB's Cole Neil with a 4:57 tech fall that included two takedowns.

Maby cruised to the 149 title after he went 4-0 with three tech falls and a pin. He began the day with two takedowns and three four-point nearfalls for an 18-2 tech fall in 1:44 over Marymount's Patrick Martin. Maby scored a 3:34 fall against EC's Seth McGraw before he capped off the tournament with two more tech falls. The Red Dragon sophomore defeated Marymount's Victor Dixon 16-0 in 4:19 in the semifinals, then he bested Castleton's John Marcellus in a 15-0 tech fall with two takedowns and two four-point nearfalls in 3:55.

Borowiec earned his first victory as a Red Dragon with a 9-3 decision, that included a pair of takedowns and a reversal against Lycoming's Luke Magnani. He scored three more takedowns in a 10-6 decision over Castleton's Griffin Norwalt, then he registered another three takedown performance and won a 10-4 decision against Misericordia's Hayden Best. In the first-place match, Borowiec dropped a 16-1 tech fall decision to Castleton's Aidan Shufelt.

Strouse recorded two takedowns in the first period of his first collegiate match and defeated Castleton's Dylan Vanegas in a 10-7 decision. He pinned Scranton's Logan Donato in 2:21, then faced Misericordia's Chase Stephan where he scored a four-point nearfall in the second period and an escape in the third for a 6-4 decision. In the championship match, Strouse had a 3-1 advantage, however Castleton's Justyce Mercado recorded a fall at 2:06.

Guzman won his first collegiate match with a 3:15 pin against Castleton's Zach Olden, then he won his next two matches via tech fall. The first was 16-1 result in 3:00 against AU's Warren Carter, then he had a 15-0 tech in 1:31 over Marymount's Jackson Fulcher. The freshman recorded a 14-3 major with four takedowns over Lycoming's Nando Ott to move onto the final, however Guzman fell in the final second in the championship to PSB's Mason Savitz.

Monica started his sophomore season with a 16-0 tech fall in 3:20 against AU's James Mahoney. In his next match, he was ahead 2-1 against Misericordia's Jacob Weaver when he scored a takedown in the final minute to secure the 5-2 decision. After dropping a 4-1 decision to Savitz, Monica upended Ott with three takedowns for a 17-1 tech fall in 5:45 in the third-place match.

Cortwright's Red Dragon debut consisted of two victories, including a fall for a third-place finish at 141. Cortwright started his day with a 2-0 decision over Lycoming's Major Lewis where he reversed Lewis in the second round for the win. In the third-place match, the junior transfer pinned AU's Wyatt Parker in 32 seconds.

Cameron Hinchcliff (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) opened the invitational with a 4:03 fall against PSB's Zach Dellinger, then he defeated Scranton's Mark Ortiz with three takedowns in a 16-8 major. After he came up short in the semifinals, Hinchcliff pinned Marymount's Ian Morales in 44 seconds in the third-place match.

Junior Tristan Hinchcliff (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa)f picked up three wins, including two falls, at 125 lbs. He started the tournament with three takedowns in a 10-3 decision over top-seeded AU's Gergios Sezenias. Hinchclifff pinned Lycoming's Evan Newman in 3:40 on the consolation side, then he scored a 2:43 fall over OU's Marcy Olivo. In the fourth-place match, Hinchcliff was bested in a rematch against Sezenia, where Sezenias scored a takedown 1:16 in sudden victory.

Junior Ocean Rados (Eastchester, NY/Eastchester High School) earned fourth-place at 157 lbs. After he fell in his opening match, Rados pinned OU's Jason Patterson in 1:42. In his match against Marymount's Valentino Antonie, Rados scored a takedown late in the second period for the 9-7 decision, then he took the fourth-place match via forfeit.

Senior Aydin DeForest (West Winfield, NY/Mount Markham) received fourth-place in the 174 lb. division. DeForest pinned Castleton's Caleb Ives in 27 seconds, then in the fourth-place match, he scored six takedowns for a 19-7 major over PSB's Matt Melchior.

Senior Carson LiCastri (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow High School) won a couple matches at 197 lbs. LiCastri pinned senior teammate Nicholas Aliani (Bayshore, NY/West Islip) in 1:29, then he won an 8-1 decision with a takedown and reversal against Castleton's Logan Frank.

Freshman Jason Kelly () recorded a couple of wins at 149 lbs., including a pin, in his first tournament as a Red Dragon. Kelly started the day with a 2:25 fall against Marymount's Jared Galang. Later in the tournament, Kelly trailed Dixon early in their matchup, before Kelly registered a takedown and four-point nearfall in the second period for an eventual 12-7 decision win.

Freshmen James Sinclair (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), Tony Monchinski (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill), Jude Betancourt (), Matt Sarter (), Dave Fernandez (), and Santino Palmisano () all earned their first collegiate win at the tournament. At 125 lbs., Sinclair pinned PSB's Jesse Fuentes in 3:39. Mochiniski scored three four-point nearfalls and defeated OU's Bo Sweetman in a 22-7 tech fall in 4:13 at 141 lbs. Betancourt competed at 149 lbs., and recorded three takedowns as he beat EC's Ethan Martel in a 10-5 decision, while Sarter also wrestled at 149 and pinned Marymount's Daries Smith in 2:35. Fernandez picked up a 15-0 tech fall with three four-point nearfalls in 2:28 at 165 lbs against AU's James Fauntleroy. Palmisano earned his first collegiate win at 174 lbs. with a 27 second fall over freshman teammate Jack Cicione ().

The Red Dragons are back in action on Saturday, November 8, as they travel to Providence, Rhode Island for the Rhode Island Open starting at 10 am.
