BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo wrestling team dropped their season-opening dual to 21st-ranked Pittsburgh, 33-6, at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Bulls faced a Panther squad that had six nationally-ranked wrestlers in their lineup.
After dropping the first three matches, Sam Ewing got the Bulls on the board with a 6-5 decision over Anthony Santaniello at 149. Ewing gave up an early takedown but responded with a reversal in the second period that changed the tide of the match. Later in the second, Ewing got a takedown to take the lead for good.
Kaleb Burgess followed with a 9-5 decision over Vince Bouzakis. Burgess was working from behind early after giving up a takedown in the first. He got a takedown in the second and another in the third to pull away for the win.
Kelin Laffey, wrestling against his old team, dropped a hard-fought 4-2 decision to #25 Dylan Evans at 165.
The Bulls are back in action next Saturday when they travel to Purdue to take on the host Boilermakers and American.
