NEWS

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The fourth-ranked Ithaca College wrestling team placed second at the nine-team Ithaca Invitational, paced by three individual champions. Senior Seth Ecker (Pottstown/Pottstown, Pa.), the titlist at 141 pounds, was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler. Sophomore Dominick Giacolone (Cato-Meridian/Cato) and junior Jules Doliscar (Brentwood/Brentwood) won championships at 125 and 174 pounds, respectively.

Senior Seth Ecker (Pottstown/Pottstown, Pa.), the defending national champion at 133 pounds, became the first athlete to win Most Outstanding Wrestler at the meet twice as a Bomber (he won the award as a freshman as well). The nation's top-ranked wrestler at his weight class, he pinned his first two opponents and was an 18-0 winner by technical fall in the final to raise his career record to 82-16 with 23 pins.

Giacolone won his first career tournament title, winning four bouts at 125 pounds. He was a winner by major decision in the semifinals and posted an overtime decision in the title match after wins of 3-0 and 8-1 in his first two matches. Giacolone is now 14-9 in his career.

Doliscar, a two-time NJCAA runner-up at Nassau Community College in his first season at Ithaca pinned all three of his opponents Friday, picked up another fall in Saturday's semifinals and won by decision in the championship round.

Three runner-up finishes highlighted Ithaca's nine other place-winners.

Senior heavyweight Matt Mahon (Brighton/Rochester), ranked ninth nationally, placed second. He earned bonus points in all three of his victories Friday, pinning his first opponent, recording a 17-8 major decision, then pinning his quarterfinal opponent. He won by technical fall in the semifinals before dropping a three-point decision in the final. Mahon is now 66-26 in his career; his 45 pins rank third all-time at Ithaca.

At 165 pounds, Nick Sanko (Hamburg Area/Lenhartsville, Pa.), a graduate student ranked sixth nationally, opened competition with a decision then posted a major decision in the quarterfinal round. He reached the finals with a seven-point win before losing by a point in the title bout. Sanko is 39-20 as a Bomber.

Freshman Alex Gomez (Brentwood/Brentwood) took second at 133 pounds, winning both his Friday bouts, including a double-overtime victory in the quarterfinals. He beat senior teammate Max Cohen (Williamsville East/East Amherst) in the semifinals and lost in the championship match. Cohen placed sixth and is now 26-28 overall.

Junior Rick Gomez (Brentwood/Brentwood) placed third at 133 pounds, winning twice in the consolation round after dropping his opening match.

At 184 pounds, senior Keith Dickey (Cedar Cliff/New Cumberland, Pa.) finished fourth. Dickey is now 17-20 in his career.

Sophomore Shane Bartrum (Oswego/Oswego) won his only match Friday. After dropping to the consolation bracket he pinned his opponent in the fifth/sixth-place bout. The two wins give him 13 in his career.

Freshmen Kevin Collins (Randolph/East Amherst) and Grant Dickey (Cedar Cliff/New Cumberland, Pa.) placed sixth at 149 and 165 pounds, respectively.

The Bombers return to action next Saturday at the Wrestle For A Cure Duals in Harrisburg, Pa. Ithaca will face two Division II schools (American International and Shippensburg) and two Division III programs (Elizabethtown and Johns Hopkins).
