Carter Baer defeats two ranked opponents to win his group; Dillon Arrick, Ryan Hartung and Luke Geleta also take first place

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Binghamton wrestling team had four of its wrestlers take first place in their respective groups Sunday at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic Sunday at Freedom High School.

In the round robin tournament, No. 29 Carter Baer took down two ranked opponents en route to winning his group with a 3-0 record at 174 lbs. Also wining their respective groups were Dillon Arrick at 133 lbs., Ryan Hartung at 141 lbs., and Luke Geleta at 149 lbs.

"I really liked the fight we showed this weekend," said Binghamton Head Wrestling Coach Ryan LeBlanc. "We took clear steps forward from last week, and that's what it's about - continuous improvement. I was especially proud of Carter, who battled for three hard-fought wins against quality opponents. He represents everything we want in this program, both on and off the mat, and it's rewarding to watch him start to realize his potential."

Highlights

Baer started off his day by defeating Jordan Chapman of Rutgers 3-2. In his next match, Baer found himself in a low-scoring bout with No. 28 Derek Gilcher of Indiana. Baer got an escape in the second period before riding Gilcher for the entire third period to get the 2-0 victory. For the finals, Baer went up against No. 26 Nick Fine of Columbia. Both wrestlers would fight to a 6-6 tie at the end of three periods. With just over a minute remaining in sudden victory, Baer got a hold of Fine's right leg and took him down to take first place.

Arrick opened his run by shutting out Duke's Spencer von Savoye in a 15-0 technical fall. The redshirt freshman followed that up with a pin against Army West Point's Damien Resendez, his first fall of the season. To close out his day, Arrick took down another wrestler from Army West Point in Devin Ryan via a 5-1 decision.

Hartung posted two technical falls throughout the day, defeating Bloomsburg's Michael Giugliano 17-2 and Sacred Heart's Anthony Cadicina 24-9. Additionally, Hartung defeated Clarion's Jake Martinec 7-2 to finish the tournament undefeated.

Geleta bounced back from an opening round loss to Clarion's Oliver Fairchild by posting a 14-3 major decision against Army West Point's Shane Reilly to pick up his first collegiate victory. Having advanced to the first place match thanks to posting a major decision, Geleta pinned Columbia's KJ Monaco for his first collegiate fall to win the group title.
