LINCOLN, Neb. – No. 23 Army West Point wrestling fought valiantly at the No. 2 team in the nation, but facing six top six wrestlers from Nebraska and another ranked No. 11, the Black Knights fell 33-3 Friday night to the Big Ten Conference foe.
The opening match was a good one for the Black Knights. Featuring a pair of ranked wrestlers at 125 lbs, Charlie Farmer took Kael Lauridsen past the seven-minute mark, securing a takedown in sudden victory to give Army an early 3-0 lead at the Devaney Center.
However, that momentum would prove to be short-lived. Ethan Berginc would be defeated 8-1 at 133 lbs and Braden Basile dropped the 141 lb bout by technical fall to No. 2 Brock Hardy. Ryan Franco battled deep at 149 lbs, but was taken down in sudden victory and fell 4-1.
Freshman Joseph Antonio—in his career dual debut—limited No. 1 Antrell Taylor to a 5-1 decision at 157 lbs. At 165 lbs, Gunner Filipowicz went into the third period tied with LJ Araujo tied at 3-3, but was too beaten, 5-3.
Taking on No. 4 Christopher Minto at 174 lbs, Andrew Christie kept the bout close into the second period, but was unable to keep Minto from pulling away down the stretch, with the match resulting in a 16-4 major decision.
After No. 6 Silas Allred beat David Barrett by fall, Wolfgang Frable took a 1-1 tie vs. No. 6 Camden McDanel into the final 90 seconds of the 197 lb bout, but couldn't hold off a late run and was defeated by decision.
In the dual's final match, Brady Colbert remained within a point of No. 2 AJ Ferrari deep into the bout, but too was defeated by decision.
