LiCastri, Monica, Rappold and Ryan Win Respective Weight Classes in Rhode Island's Anchorman Invite
PROVIDENCE, RI. -- The No. 11 nationally ranked Oneonta wrestling team traveled to Rhode Island College and competed in the Anchorman Invitational on Saturday. Oneonta had seniors Mason Rappold (/) (157 lbs.), Jack Ryan (Trumbull, CT/) (184 lbs.), Carson LiCastri (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow High School) (197 lbs.), and sophomore Ryley Monica (Adams, NY/South Jefferson Central) (165 lbs.) all crowned champions in their respective weights and combined for 12 falls, a tech, and a major in 15 matches. Ryan received the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler for his performance of four first-round falls with a total time of 2:09 on the mat.
Senior Kennith Jackson (New Orleans, LA/) (285 lbs.), junior Billy Colloca (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon Senior High) (125 lbs.), and freshmen Jack Borowiec () (133 lbs.) and Kingston Strouse (Northport, N.Y./Northport) (157 lbs.) all finished second in their respective weight classes. Four other Red Dragons took third place and another five others placed top-six as the Red Dragons won the overall team event. Along with Oneonta, the invitational consisted of host-institution Rhode Island College (RIC), Emmanual College (EC), New England College (NEC), and Keystone College (KC).
Ryan, who is nationally ranked second at 184 lbs., had four first round pins with 2:09 of total mat time en route to his 184 lb. He opened the day with a 26 second pin against RICs Rocco Simone, then recorded a 36 second fall against Simone's teammate, Ethan Silva. Ryan moved on to the finals after pinning a Red Dragon teammate in 22 seconds in the semifinals, and he defeated RICs Andrew Pappas with a 45 second fall in the championship.
LiCastri recorded four pins, all in the first period, as he won the 197 lb. division. He started off with a 51 second fall versus NEC's Trevion Atallah, then pinned a Red Dragon teammate in 1:16. LiCastri scored a 41 second fall in the semifinals to move on to the finals where he pinned Keystone's Nero Bono in 2:08 for the title.
Monica won the 165 lb. class with a fall, a tech, and a major. He started off with a 2:28 pin against RIC's Cooper Lavigne, then advanced to the final after defeating RIC's Jordan DaCosta with three takedowns in a 17-0 tech fall in 5:48. In the first-place match, Monica tallied a takedown in each period and beat RIC's Scott Lallas in a 12-1 major.
Rappold recorded three first round falls to advance to the finals at 157. He pinned Keystone's Xander Byers in 35 seconds, an Oneonta teammate in 58 seconds, then RIC's Owen Roche in the semifinals in 1:40. Rappold took the 157-lb. crown by forfeit over Strouse.
Jackson had two pins for a second-place finish. The senior 285-pounder started the day with a 38-second, first period fall against ECs Canton Hill, then he recorded a 6:31 pin over ECs Jack Disharoon. In the final, Jackson came up short after NECs Brandon Lavasta scored a takedown in the second period for a 5-2 decision.
Strouse started the day at 157 lbs. with a 52 second fall against EC's Javier Borges. He then totaled four takedowns in a 16-2 tech in 6:08 against RIC's Constantine Isaac. In the semifinals, Strouse bested RIC's Will Hunt with a takedown and four-point nearfall in a 10-5 decision. Strouse forfeited the first-place match against his Red Dragon teammate, Rappold.
Colloca pinned an Oneonta teammate in 13 seconds to start his day at 125, then he posted a 27 second fall against NECs Dominic Gangi to move on to the finals. In the finals, RICs Domenic Sousa recorded a takedown in the final seconds against Colloca for an 11-9 decision.
Borowiec had a 3:34 pin against RICs Micah Soe to start the day at 133 lbs., then he scored a takedown with 28 seconds left in the second period for a 3-1 decision against RIC's Robert Stone. He dropped a 12-5 decision to New England College's Patrick Hughes in the finals.
Junior Cameron Hinchcliff (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) (125 lbs.), sophomore Ariel Waldman (/) (133 lbs.), freshman Jude Betancourt (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) (149 lbs.), and senior Nicholas Aliani (Bayshore, NY/West Islip) (197 lbs.) all had a third-place finish.
Hinchcliff began the tournament with a 21-6 tech fall at 7:00 against a Red Dragon. After dropping in the semifinals, he scored a 50 second pin in the consolation semifinals, then recorded another fall at 1:21 in the third-place match against NECs Gangi.
Waldman, totaled 12 nearfall points in a 15-0 tech fall in 2:22 against RICs Anthony Isaac. He scored another tech in the quarter finals with three takedowns for a 17-2 score at 3:26 against RICs Soe. In the consolation semifinals, he had a 1:25 fall in a rematch against Isaac, then scored three takedowns in a 15-1 major versus RICs Robert Stone in the third-place match.
Betancourt pinned Keystone's Michael Palinkas in 1:31 to start his tournament at 149 lbs. On the consolation side, he pinned an Oneonta teammate in 4:08, then he scored three takedowns and two reversals for a 15-6 major over ECs Seth McGrew. Betancourt picked up a 1:55 fall over NECs Tanner Kamuda to advance to the third-place match, where he faced NECs Joseph Gangi and scored three takedowns and a reversal en route to a 14-4 major.
Aliani scored a pair of first-period pins against two Red Dragon teammates at 197 lbs. His first fall was at 1:15, then he recorded a 1:24 fall in the third-place match against sophomore Jason Gielarowski (Mastic, NY/William Floyd). Gielarowski picked up a 2:24 fall against Atallah as he took fourth place at 197 lbs.
Senior Brandon Cirincione (East Quogue, NY/Westhampton Beach) picked up his first collegiate win with a pin at 184 lbs. Cirincione was up 6-3 in the first period against EC's Matt Macphail after scoring an escape, a takedown and a two-point nearfall, then he pinned Macphail in the second period for the 4:11 fall. BC finished fourth at 184 lbs.
Freshman Santino Palmisano () pinned NECs Dominica Demaio at 4:15 for a fourth-place finish at 174 lbs.
Sophomore Andrew Montagano (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) scored a 19 second fall against KCs Tanner Pringle at 133 lbs., then he faced RICs Soe, where Montagano scored a couple of reversals and a four-point nearfall for a 10-8 decision.
Sophomore Jackson Maby (Susquehanna, PA/Susquehanna Community) had a 15-0 tech fall in 1:56 against KCs Ralph Nieves at 149 lbs. and later pinned ECs Seth McGrew in 4:29 to advance to the semifinals. Unfortunately, he had to forfeit the rest of his matches and took sixth place.
Senior Jonathan Zenny (Valley Stream, NY/G.W. Hewlett) (165 lbs.), junior Tristan Hinchcliff (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) (125 lbs.), sophomores Konnor Rosenzweig (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) (125 lbs.), Luke Leshaj (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) (157 lbs.), and freshmen Matthew Sarter (149 lbs.), Jason Kelly () (125 lbs.), and Isaac Erickson (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park) (197 lbs.) all recorded a fall at the tournament. Zenny, Hinchcliff, Rosenzweig, Leshaj, and Kelly each scored their pin in the first period of their respective matches, while Erickson finished in fifth-place at 197.
Freshmen Tony Monochiniski had three tech falls and three four-point nearfalls for a 26-7 tech fall in 7:00 at 141 lbs.
Sophomore Charles Rosenthal (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) had a win at 285 lbs. Rosenthal recorded a pair of takedowns in first two periods, then he scored another takedown with 24 seconds left in overtime for a 9-6 sudden victory over ECs Kevin McAninch.
The Red Dragons are back in action on Saturday, November 15, for the Wilkes Invitational at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. starting at 9:30 am.
