Cortland Finishes Second at NYS Collegiate Tourney; Three Red Dragons Win Weight-Class Titles

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Three Cortland wrestlers won weight-class titles and 11 others posted top-six finishes at the New York State Collegiate Championships Open, hosted by Onondaga Community College.

Cortland finished second out of 19 schools in the final team standings with 195.5 points. Ithaca won the title with 204 points, followed by Cortland, Brockport (166.5), Oneonta (142.5) and Merchant Marine Academy (138) in the top five.

The tournament consisted of 20 weight classes - 10 "Open" and 10 "Freshman/Sophomore." Cortland freshmen Colton Havens (Canisteo/Canisteo-Greenwood), Luke Chernaski (Merrick/Kellenberg Memorial) and Nicholas Rose (Lindenhurst) earned championships in the freshman/sophomore division. Havens finished 5-0 with a pin, three technical falls and a major decision at 157 pounds, Chernaski posted a 4-0 record with three pins at 174 pounds, and Rose went 4-0 with four pins at 197 pounds.

Senior Dom Vinci (Spencerport) placed second in the Open 141-pound division with a 3-1 record, including a pin and a technical fall. He won his first three matches before losing to an Oneonta wrestler in the finals. Sophomore Jack Pickersgill (Holtsville/Sachem East) finished 6-1 to place third in the freshman/sophomore 165-pound bracket. His victories included three pins, a technical fall, a decision and a medical forfeit. He was in a "no contest" in the third-place match due to having been on the mat six times previously during the day.

Three Red Dragons earned fourth-place showings: junior Rocco Futia (Wallkill) with a 2-2 record, including a technical fall, in the Open 133-pound bracket; sophomore Cade Sands (Addison/Addison Central) with a 4-2 record, with two pins and two technical falls, in the freshman/sophomore 133-pound weight class; and sophomore Chris Ayala (Brentwood) in the freshman/sophomore 285-pound bracket after going 4-2 with two pins.

Earning fifth-place finishes were junior Culley Bellino (Canastota) at Open 141 pounds (4-2, two pins), sophomore Bryson Tibbs (Middletown) at Open 197 pounds (4-2, four pins), sophomore Ryan Closterman (Somerville, NJ) at freshman/sophomore 174 pounds (4-2, one pin, two technical falls), and freshman Darren de Jong (Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro North) at freshman/sophomore 197 pounds (3-2, three pins). Rounding out Cortland's placewinners were sophomore Anthony Mayers (Somerville) in sixth place at freshman/sophomore 174 pounds (2-1) and freshman Brady Callahan (Irondequoit) in sixth place at freshman/sophomore 285 pounds (1-3, one pin; medical forfeit in fifth-place match).

Other Cortland wrestlers who won at least three matches at the tournament, but didn't place due to the size of their brackets, were:

Joseph Visciano (Smithtown/Smithtown East) - 3-2, technical fall and major decision, at 174 Open
