Bearcat defeats No. 16 Jasiah Queen for fifth victory against ranked opponent this season; Binghamton is defeated in dual 24-12
VESTAL, N.Y. – Carter Baer recorded his fifth victory against a ranked opponent this season during the Binghamton wrestling team's dual against EIWA opponent Drexel Friday at the Events Center.
Baer, who entered the dual ranked No. 26 nationally in the InterMat rankings at 174 lbs., defeated Jasiah Queen, who was ranked No. 16 in the FloWrestling poll, 2-0.
"I was just trying not to think too much about what he [Jasiah Queen] does and just stick to what I do," said Baer. "What [Binghamton Head Wrestling] Coach [Ryan] LeBlanc preaches in practice and just kind of executing my skills and positions, and I think I did a pretty good job at doing that tonight."
The Bearcats (4-2, 2-1 EIWA), however, were ultimately defeated by the Dragons (10-3, 2-0 EIWA) 24-12.
Highlights
In Baer's bout against Queen, both wrestlers fought to a scoreless tie at the end of the first period. In the second, Baer began on top and was able to ride Queen for the entire two minutes. Baer then received a point after Queen chose to begin the third period neutral. Queen made multiple attempts to get the go-ahead takedown, but Baer was able to defend himself to hold the lead, before he ultimately earned the riding time point and the victory.
In a thrilling match at 157 lbs., Fin Nadeau was able to get a last-second takedown to secure a 4-1 win against Luke Nichter. Nadeau moved ahead 1-0 after getting an escape with less than a minute remaining in the second period. However, Nichter countered with an escape of his own early in the third period. With less than a minute to go, Nichter had accumulated 1:01 of riding time, meaning he would get the win if Nadeau could not secure a point of his own. At just less than 20 seconds, Nadeau was able to get a hold of both of Nichter's legs and take him down to grab the lead and eventually earn his 12th win of the season.
The dual started out with Carson Wagner and Oumar Tounkara wrestling each other in a back-and-forth contest in the 125 lb., bout. Wagner entered the second period down 3-1, but rallied with an escape and a takedown to move ahead 5-3. Tounkara responded with an escape before the end of the second, and picked up another one in the third to send the match into overtime. The two wrestlers engaged each other just seconds into the extra frame, but Wagner was able to gain the advantage and eventually get the takedown for the win.
Mikey Squires improved to 10-1 overall on the season and 6-0 in duals with an 8-2 decision over Ibrahim Ameer in the 197 lb., bout.
