Berea, OH- The Alfred State men's wrestling team took third place at the John Summa Invite. The Pioneers notched seven place finishers.
In the 184 bracket, Sean Malenfant took the top spot as he went 5-0 on the day with five first round falls. He took down Caiden Hooks (Ott) in :44, Brayden Kobylinski (MU) in 1:11, Kodi Pfeiffer (CWRU) in 1:29, Mathew Gummere (CWRU) in 2:04, and Aiden Helmke (ONU) in 2:11.
In the 125 weight class, Mason Drew took second place. Drew tallied three straight falls to reach the first-place match. Drew would suffer his first loss of the day to take second place.
In the 197 bracket, Hunter LaVigne notched a second period fall to start his day. After dropping his next match he tallied a tech fall followed by a first-round fall to secure a spot in the third-place match. In the third place match, LaVigne notched a first-round fall in 2:51 to take third place.
Aaron Johnson opened the day with two falls and a decision win before suffering his first loss to place him in the 285 third-place match. In the third place match, Johnson suffered a sudden victory loss to take fourth place.
In the 157 bracket, Owen Cummings took third place. Cummings tallied back-to-back falls to start the day. After dropping his next match, Cumming notched a first period fall followed by a decision win to secure a spot in the third-place match. In the third-place match, Cumming tallied another first round fall to take third place.
Other place finishers were: James Starowitz (285) in sixth place,and Keeran Timerman (184) in sixth place.
The Pioneers will return to action next Saturday, February 14th for the AMCC Individual Championship at Penn College.
