The Falcons Posted Eight Combined Pins In A Pair Of Victories On Saturday
SCRANTON, Pa. – It was a dominant display for Lackawanna College men's wrestling on Saturday in the final tune-up before the postseason, as the Falcons defeated Utica University and Jamestown CC by scores of 40-18 and 48-6, respectively, in a tri-dual inside the historic Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium.
The Falcons (5-6) earned six pins in its seven victories, including five-straight bouts from 149 lbs. up to 184 lbs., in the win against Utica (4-2) that started the afternoon.
Through the first three bouts, the Pioneers led 12-4, earning wins at 133 via forfeit and 141 via a pin. Lackawanna's positive result came from Spencer Crawley (Bloomfield, NJ) to start the day, taking a 15-5 major decision win at 125.
At 149 lbs., Matt Gashi-Brito (Fairfax, VA) earned a pin at 55 seconds, taking down Sean Aldrich from Utica to get the Falcons within 12-10. Connor Ondek (Scranton, PA) followed up with his own fall, pinning Matt Bonato from Utica midway through the second period to make it 16-12, Falcons. Richard Leslie (Peckville, PA) then made it three-straight, pinning Hunter Morton at 2:30, and both Malik Nelson (Bloomfield, NJ) and Jeremiah Diaz (Wyomissing, PA) each won by fall in just over 90 seconds to expand the Lackawanna advantage to 34-12.
After a Utica win at 197, Brodie Daugherty (Manheim, PA) kept his unbeaten run going, taking down Vince Geritano at 1:48 with a fall to give the Falcons the 40-18 finish.
Jamestown (1-9), competing with only three wrestlers, was the late opponent for the Falcons on the afternoon. The Falcons picked up six forfeits, and both teams forfeited at 133 lbs., so there were only bouts at 157, 184, and 285. Ondek won via fall in 1:40 at 157 to give the Falcons a 24-0 lead at the time, but Jamestown got a win at 184 via fall midway through the second period to cut into the deficit at 36-6. Daugherty won his second match of the day, pinning Jamison Caldwell from Jamestown in 1:36 to make it a 48-6 victory for the Falcons.
Jamestown fell to Utica in the middle dual, 51-3, with the Pioneers picking up seven forfeits.
The results mean that Daugherty is still unbeaten at 19-0 heading into next weekend's NJCAA Gulf Atlantic District Championships, while Gashi-Brito, a national qualifier from last year, is 18-7 at 149 lbs. Lackawanna College will hold next week's District Championships, a qualifying tournament for the NJCAA National Championships. The district meet is set for a 10:00am ET start inside the historic Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium, and the Falcons will welcome eleven other opponents from up-and-down the east coast.
