ALBANY — When Dundee’s Peyton Mullin won her first state wrestling championship in 2024, she was the No. 9 seed pulling off an upset over the top seed and shocking all in attendance, including herself.
Two years and more than 200 wins later, Mullin was on the opposite side of a colossal upset on Thursday night at MVP Arena in Albany.
In the NYSPHSAA 235-pound championship bout, Mullin was pinned at the 1:44 mark of the first period after her opponent Naomi Gonzalez was able to land on top of her on a bear-hug takedown. Mullin couldn’t free her back from the mat and her bid for a third-straight state title was lost, surprising all in attendance as well as Gonzalez.
