Pioneer's Rigerman earns state wrestling berth

ANGOLA — A year ago, Pioneer's Mike Rigerman could only take in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association wrestling championships as a spectator.

Rigerman was a state tournament alternate, having been decisioned, 5-3, by teammate Tyler Smith in the 195-pound Section 6 finals. Smith went on to place third in the state.

But Rigerman will be wrestling at Albany's Times-Union Center in two weeks. He assured that Saturday at the Section 6 Division 2 state qualifier at Lake Shore. In fact, the junior, also the Big 30 football Defensive Player of the Year last fall, did so in dominant fashion.
