Section V earns 22 wild-card berths for state wrestling championships

NEWS

Brockport senior Troy Ferris was stopped short of winning Section V's SuperSectional Division I 145-pound wrestling tournament.

This was no surprise, given that Ferris faced three-time state champion Frankie Gissendanner in the final and the Penfield senior earned the automatic berth to the high school state championships.

Ferris still managed to be upbeat after Gissendanner's win by pin, confident that he would receive a wild card-entry into the state championships on Feb. 23-24 in Albany. Turns out, losing to the now six-time SuperSectional champion didn't hurt Ferris' chances as the Brockport middleweight was one of 22 wrestlers in Section V selected as at-large qualifiers for the season-ending state tournaments.
