EA's Putney, Iroquois' Day win titles

NEWS

Both the East Aurora and Iroquois wrestling programs will be represented in the upcoming state championships in Albany following the winning efforts of Johnny Putney and Cory Day, respectively, at Saturday's annual Section VI Division II championships at Lake Shore.

Putney, the only wrestler from East Aurora to place in last year's tournament after he finished second in the 126-pound weight class, earned his spot at states by recording a 6-2 decision over Fredonia/Brocton's Giovani Russo in their 138-pound final. Putney cruised through his first two matches to earn a spot in the finals, posting a 15-0 technical fall over Southwestern's Dagon Bryant in the quarterfinals and a 7-0 decision over Olean's Gavin Kulp in the semifinals.

Day, meanwhile, follows in older brother Connor's footsteps after just missing out on a trip to states with Connor during Connor Day's senior campaign last winter.
