Holley captures GR tourney title; A dozen Hawks reach the finals

LYNDONVILLE ― Holley captured its fouth league title in five seasons by cruising to an easy victory at the Genesee Region League Wrestling Tournament Saturday at Lyndonville.

The Hawks registered 241 points, easily defeating second-place Attica, which had 152.

Pembroke was in third place with 148.5 points, followed by Byron-Bergen (138.5), Kendall (71.5), Alexander (44), Lyndonville (43), Notre Dame (29.5), and Oakfield-Alabama (28).

Holley had an impressive 12 wrestlers advance to the finals in their repective weight classes, with five of them winning.

Key McPherson defeated Chad Dilimone of Pembroke 6-0 at 145 pounds, Matt Denning pinned Pembroke's Mike McKendrick in 3:21 at 152 pounds, Rob McElwain nipped Brandon Comstock of Attica 6-5 at 160 pounds, Ron Ryan pinned Byron-Bergen's Jeff Aradine in 1:20 at 215 pounds, and Lucas Doty made quick work of Attica's Brock Minnick at 275 pounds, pinning him in 59 seconds.

Placing second for the Hawks in their respective weight classes were Matt Banks (96 pounds), Ken Ryan (112), Justin Widrig (125), Nick Ornt (130), Sam Miller (140), Andrew Vendetti (171), and Justin Corona (189).

Another Holley wrestler, Brett Underwood, won the consolation finals at 103 with an 11-2 major decision over Alexander's Dan Henderson, meaning that Holley had 13 top-three finishers in 15 weight classes.

Attica had four individual champions.

Jamie Carpenter pinned Banks in 4:50 at 96 pounds, Dylan Dabolt decisioned Pembroke's Jeff Hathaway 5-2 at 103 pounds, Dylan Rusiniak beat Byron-Bergen's Steve McInally 4-2 in overtime at 135 pounds and John Fuller beat Sam Miller of Holley 5-2 at 140 pounds.

Comstock (160 pounds) and Minnick (275) were second-place finishers for the Blue Devils, who also had five wrestlers place fourth.

Pembroke had nine wrestlers finish in the top three, with three of them winning. Nick Price captured another title at 112 pounds by pinning Ryan in 1:22. Sam Domthongmivanh edged Kendall's Geoff Chippendale 7-6 at 119 pounds, and Clay Johnson pinned Vendetti in 1:33 at 171 pounds.

Hathaway (103 pounds), Dilimone (145), and McKendrick (152) placed second.

Byron-Bergen had a pair of individual champions in Mike McInally and Joel Jarnot.

McInally pinned Widrig in 4:40 at 125 pounds, while Jarnot beat Ornt 5-3 at 130 pounds.

Steve McInally (135 pounds) and Aradine (215) were second.

The Bees also had three third-place finishers and three fourth-place finishers.

Wes Snyder of Kendall was the other individual champion, pinning Corona in 2:35 at 189 pounds.

Domthongmivanh and Snyder were named most outstanding wrestlers of the meet.

The Section 5 Championships will take place next weekend.
