BROCKPORT — Last year, there was only one Section Five champion per weight class. This year, there's a new system.
Yesterday at Brockport State, two wrestlers per weight qualified for next weekend's NYSPHSAA State Tournament in Buffalo.
For the first time ever, the State tournament is split into two divisions: Large School (Division I) and Small School (Division II).
Among this year's Division II qualifiers, there were three repeat Section Five champions from last year: Pembroke's Nicholas Price, Attica's Pat Hagerty, and Kendall's Donald Williams.
In front of a near-capacity crowd, many competitors wrestled their last match of the season, while others qualified for a final weekend of competition. Here is how the Division II final matches played out:
96 pounds - After a scoreless 1st period, Attica freshman Dylan Dabolt chose down and performed a successful switch on Warsaw 7th-grader Ian Paddock with 30 seconds left in the 2nd period to take a 2-0 lead. Paddock chose bottom to start the 3rd period and, with two seconds left as Dabolt was looking to turn him with a cradle, he reversed Dabolt to tie the match (2-2) and put the match into overtime. With no wrestler scoring in the first overtime, the match continued into overtime top/bottom criteria where Dabolt, having earned the right to choose after scoring the first points of the match, chose top. Paddock was unable to escape on a standup and roll attempt, and Dabolt won by criteria.
103 pounds - With no serious shots from either wrestler and a warning on Haverling 7th-grader Cody Hutcheson for stalling, the match was tied at zero going into the 2nd period. Pembroke junior Nick Price won the coin toss and deferred his position choice to Hutcheson, who chose bottom. Price went to work, scoring 8 total backpoints, 5 off a bar arm and 3 off a half nelson, to take an 8-0 lead heading into the 3rd period. Choosing bottom, Price escaped on a standup and then spun around a shot by Hutcheson to score a takedown and win the match, 11-1.
112 pounds - Byron-Bergen sophomore Mike McInally nearly scored a takedown on Attica senior Billy Hulme near the edge of the mat late in the first period, but the points were waived off once the refs noticed that Hulme had been poked in the eye and was calling for time. Hulme chose bottom to start the 2nd period and was able to escape with a standing switch to take a 1-0 lead. McInally then scored a takedown and rode Hulme out to take a 2-1 lead into the 3rd period. McInally chose bottom and Hulme rode him for about a minute with a powerful tight waist. But when he couldn't score any backpoints, Hulme released McInally to take his chances on his feet with a minute remaining in the match. In the end, McInally spun around a shot by Hulme to score a takedown and win the match, 5-1.
119 pounds - Attica junior Pat Hagerty started off the match using a Russian setup to score a spin-around takedown on Hornell freshman Aaron Parks. Hagerty then released Parks, leaving the match at 2-1 going into the 2nd period. Parks chose bottom and Hagerty let him up to start the period. Parks then attempted a headlock that Hagerty capitalized on to score a takedown. Hagerty released Parks again and then dumped Parks to his back to score 5 points. Again Hagerty let parks go and scored another takedown and then turned Parks for 2 backpoints using a corkscrew. Leading 13-4 heading into the 3rd period, Hagerty chose neutral. With a single leg, Hagerty lifted Parks and dropped him quickly to score his fifth takedown of the match to make the score 15-4. Letting Parks go three more times, Hagerty scored three more takedowns all off of front headlocks. Final score: 21-8.
125 pounds - Pal-Mac senior Dan Rudy led the match after the 1st period scoring a takedown off of a low single to navy ride. Warsaw freshman Paul Paddock chose bottom in the 2nd period where Rudy used a half nelson ride to hold him down. Rudy chose bottom in the 3rd period and reversed Paddock to take a 4-0 lead. Then, in a change of events, as Rudy was fixing to turn Paddock in a far side cradle, Paddock tipped Rudy onto his own back. Rudy, struggling to keep his cradle locked and tip Paddock back over, broke his grip and was pinned by Paddock with 30 seconds left in the match.
130 pounds - Attica's Dylan Rusiniak was able to hold off a low single attempt by Letchworth senior Derek Sweet in the 1st period to leave the score at zeroes heading into the 2nd. Sweet started on top and rode out Rusiniak mostly using a half nelson for the duration of the 2nd period. Sweet chose bottom in the 3rd, but was hit with a stalling call to give Rusiniak a 1-0 lead. But with 1 second remaining in the match, Sweet nailed a standing Granby roll and reversed Rusiniak to win the match, 2-1.
135 pounds - Holley senior Andrew Grillo scored a low single leg takedown to take a 2-0 lead in the first period over Pal-Mac senior Bryan Rodman. Grillo, on top in the 2nd period, easily rode Rodman out for the remainder of the first period, locking up 3 cradles that he was unable to finish. Grillo chose down in the third period where he escaped and took Rodman down with a front headlock to win the match, 5-0. Grillo later won the Division II Outstanding Wrestler award.
140 pounds - Addison senior Mike Thompson and Waterloo freshman Josh Mateo headed into the 2nd period tied at zero. Mateo chose bottom and escaped with a sit-out/turn-in to start the 2nd period. Thompson then scored a takedown off a low single to take the lead, 2-1. Thompson was on bottom to start the 3rd period. Mateo held on until he was warned for stalling, after which Thompson escaped and eventually won the match, 4-2.
145 pounds - Kendall senior Donald Williams wrestled Hornell Tyler Sick and took a 2-0 lead into the 2nd period where Sick chose bottom. Sick escaped after which Williams ankle picked him for 2. Sick escaped again to make the match 4-2. In the 3rd, Williams chose neutral and scored a takedown with a single-to-double leg lift. Sick escaped and the final score was 6-3.
152 pounds - Kendall senior Torry Tooley scored a quick takedown on Canisteo's Devan Bertch to start off the match with a 2-0 lead. Bertch escaped and the score was 2-1 going into the 2nd period. Tooley chose bottom and scored an escape, and the scored remained 3-1 for the duration of the period. In the 3rd, Bertch chose bottom where he scored an escape. Tooley went on to takedown Bertch with a front headlock with 40 seconds left and clinch the match, 5-2.
160 pounds - Pann Yan senior Brendan Hamm used a low single to takedown Keshequa senior Alex Baxter in the 1st period. Baxter escaped to make the score 2-1. Baxter chose bottom and escaped again to tie the score (2-2) in the 2nd period, but Hamm pressed on and scored another low single-leg takedown to take the lead, 4-2. Baxter escaped on a stand-up, and the scored was 4-3 going into the 3rd. This time Hamm chose bottom and scored an immediate escape of his own using a stand-up. Hamm was penalized 1 point for stalling, and the final score was 5-4, Hamm.
171 pounds - Attica senior John Wassink scored 3 takedowns on Canisteo sophomore Nick Clark in the 1st period, and Clark scored a reversal to make the score 6-4 heading into the 2nd. Wassink chose bottom, escaped, and spun around Clark to score a takedown and take a 9-4 lead. Clark chose bottom in the 3rd where Wassink let him escape. Wassink defended a single-leg attempt by Clark using a crossface and spun around to score 2. In the end, Clark scored a takedown off a bad shot from Wassink, but it wasn't enough as Wassink went on to win, 13-8.
189 pounds - Perry senior Karl Meyer scored a takedown and rode out Pavilion's Tyler Luders to take a 2-0 lead into the 2nd period. Meyer chose bottom and escaped to extend his lead to 3-0 as they headed into the 3rd. Luders chose neutral and scored a takedown to make the score 3-2. Luders released Meyer and spun around to score another takedown and tie the match at 4. Meyer then escaped and scored a quick takedown to take the lead, 7-4. After Luder's second injury timeout, Meyers chose down and scored a reversal to win the match, 9-4.
215 pounds - Hornell's Bill Drake took a quick 2-0 lead over Mynderse's Bobby Plate, after which Plate escaped to make the score 2-1 heading into the 2nd period. Plate chose bottom and escaped with 26 second left in the 2nd to tie the match at 2. Drake chose down in the 3rd and scored a quick escape to take the lead, 3-2. Drake then took Plate to his back, scoring 5 points and winning, 8-3.
