Ashkar Wins Jonathan Kaloust Open

NEWS

Five Bearcats place at season opening tournament

VESTAL, N.Y. - Redshirt sophomore Audey Ashkar took the 125 lb title at the 2018 Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open Sunday evening at the Events Center. Ashkar was one of five Bearcats that placed in the tournament, including runner-up Vincent DePrez (174), Steve Bulzomi (fourth at 125), Anthony DePrez (fourth at 197) and Joe Doyle (fifth at HWT). The first place finish was the first of Ashkar's career. As a team, Binghamton came in fifth out of 20 teams with 300 total match points.

"We learned a lot today," head coach Kyle Borshoff said. "It's been a long time since we last competed. We started out slow but we got the ball rolling as the tournament went on and I think a lot of our guys wrestled some good matches. Audey did a fantastic job. He's been talking about being consistent in everything he does and that consistency is what got him through his finals match. Today he really showed what it takes in our sport to succeed."
