Nine defending Section VI Div. I champions returned this season with seven of them earning number one seeds for Saturday's NYS qualifier at Starpoint. The Section sent seven wildcards to the 2017-2018 NYS tournament (the most for Section VI Div. I in the wildcard era), had its best place finish (5th) in the team scoring since the 2014 season, and had its first state champion since 2012.
